During a soccer match, a high school kid from South Carolina had a brain bleed that left him hospitalized.
Last Tuesday at Carolina Forest High School, 15-year-old Jase McDowell was participating in a junior varsity soccer match when he suddenly felt very lightheaded. The teenager started to throw up as he sprinted off the field and eventually collapsed to the ground.
According to his mother, Amanda McDowell, the athletic directors phoned 911.
The 15-year-old suffered a seizure during the ambulance ride, and when they arrived at the hospital, medical professionals discovered a significant brain bleed.
An arteriovenous malformation, or improper link between arteries, is what caused the bleeding. Less than 1% of people are affected by the illness, according to the Barrow Neurological Institute.
Following the discovery, Jase McDowell’s parents were informed by a neurosurgeon that he required immediate surgery.
“I really don’t even know that he’s going to make it, but we just have to go in and try,” he stated, according to Amanda McDowell.
Fortunately, the bleeding could be controlled by the medical team. After that, the teenager was taken to a separate hospital for a second surgery, which, according to his mother, went well.
Jase McDowell’s mother reports that while the bleed originally affected his left side of the body’s motor abilities, he is now able to move his left hand and wiggle his toes. He can also make requests and obey instructions.
Jase McDowell’s friends and classmates have paid him visits in the hospital.

Amanda McDowell was in Greenville with her daughter Adaya, who had just undergone major surgery when her son was admitted to the hospital. Her daughter likewise suffered a serious brain injury seven years prior.
