ATLANTA, GEORGIA—United Soccer League (USL) Championship made history on Friday after two of its players has made it to the roster of the United States Men’s Soccer Team (USMNT) senior team for its friendly match against Bosnia and Herzegovina on Dec. 18 (8 p.m. EST, FS1/Unimás/TUDN) at Dignity Health Sports Park in Carson, California.
Louisville City FC’s Jonathan Gomez and Orange County SC’s Kobi Henry were named to the 26-man squad of USMNT for the international friendly match.
Gomez has a stellar year as he was announced as the 2021 USL Championship Young Player of the Year after a standout season at Louisville City FC that saw him also earn selection to the 2021 USL Championship All-League First Team. The 18-year-old helped lead LouCity to a seventh consecutive appearance in the Eastern Conference Final of the USL Championship Playoffs while performing strongly at both ends of the field. Gomez recorded two goals and eight assists in attack, and 39 interceptions, 117 recoveries, and a 75.9 percent tackle success rate defensively.
“I’m honored to be selected,” Gomez said.
Henry on the other hand is part of the Orange County SC side that this past weekend claimed the USL Championship Final and appeared as a late-game substitute during the side’s 3-1 win against the Tampa Bay Rowdies at Al Lang Stadium. The 17-year-old made 19 appearances for Orange County over the regular season and playoffs, including 16 starts, as he recorded 60 clearances, 22 interceptions, and 15 blocked shots while posting an 82.8 percent passing accuracy rate on 46.6 passes/90 minutes.
Henry’s success with Orange County saw him recently called up to the United States U.S. U-20 Men’s National Team for the Revelations Cup in Mexico in November, where he started in two contests.
“It’s an honor to represent my country at the highest level and I am ready to compete and give my all during this camp,” Henry said.
