ATLANTA, GEORGIA—The dream of United States Men’s National team soccer (USMNT) to win its three World Cup Qualifying games in January and February is off to a great start.
A second-half goal from Antonee Robinson carried the team to a 1-0 win against the visiting El Salvador football team at the Lower.com Field at Columbus, Ohio on January 27.
After a scoreless first half, USMNT played better in the second half in front of its 20,000 fans to salvage the much-needed win.
With the victory, USMNT improves to 9-1-2 in World Cup qualifying matches in Columbus and 10-1-3 overall.
Tonight’s result gives the USA 18 points from nine matches and means the USMNT will finish the evening in second place in the Octagonal standings with the top three finishers at the end of the final round advancing to Qatar. The USMNT will play the second of three winter World Cup qualifiers (which will take place in just seven days) when it visits first-place Canada on Sunday, Jan. 30 in Hamilton (3 p.m. ET; Paramount+, Telemundo, Universo).
Earlier, two members of the Atlanta United FC have made it once again to the USMNT roster.
Brooks Lennon and Miles Robinson have been named to the USMNT roster by manager Gregg Berhalter for three upcoming Concacaf World Cup Qualifying matches.
The USMNT will face El Salvador (Jan. 27, 7:00 p.m. EST), Canada (Jan. 30, 3:00 p.m. EST), and Honduras (Feb. 2, 7:30 p.m. EST) during this international window.
Lennon, 24, recently made his senior team debut against Bosnia and Herzegovina on Dec. 18, starting the match and playing 62 minutes. He’ll make his World Cup Qualifying debut if he appears in a match during this window. Overall on the U.S. Youth circuit, Lennon earned four caps and scored four goals with the U.S. U-23s, 17 caps and seven goals with the U-20s and nine caps and one goal with the U-18s.
Robinson, 24, has 15 caps and three goals with the USMNT, earning his senior team debut on Sept. 6, 2019, coming on as a substitute in a friendly against Mexico. Robinson started all six matches and scored two goals at the 2021 Concacaf Gold Cup where he helped the U.S. secure five clean sheets and scored the game-winning goal in the final as the U.S. beat Mexico 1-0. He started six World Cup Qualifiers in 2021 and was nominated for U.S. Soccer Male Player of the Year.
