TOCCOA, Ga. — Imagine playing soccer for 37 hours straight. No, really — thirty-seven. That’s exactly what a group of iron-willed young men from Toccoa Falls College (TFC) did back in 1975, earning a spot in the Guinness World Records for the longest continuous soccer game.
Now, half a century later, those record-setters are gearing up for a 50th anniversary celebration on April 26, and the memories are as sharp as ever.
“It wasn’t just a game — it was a test of heart, endurance, and faith,” says Stan Hotalen, one of the team members who endured the near two-day match that has since become legend in northeast Georgia soccer circles.
Fueled by Faith and Fundraising
The marathon match wasn’t just for glory. According to Hotalen, the game served as a fundraiser — though what they raised in spirit may have outweighed any dollars collected.
With Coach Julio Vena on the sideline, never once sitting unless the players took their 10-minute breaks every two hours, the team battled fatigue, dehydration, and delirium. “We were all in rough shape by the end,” Hotalen recalls. “Most of us lost weight. We were exhausted and probably a little delirious… but we didn’t quit.”
The Power of a Verse
As the hours stretched on, the players found motivation in more than just the scoreboard. A banner quoting Philippians 4:13 — “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me” — hung overhead, providing a spiritual boost that carried them through the mental and physical grind.

Fellow teammate Steve Irvin shared how the reunion came together — a special chance to relive a defining moment in their lives. “It’s not just about soccer,” he said. “It’s about brotherhood, determination, and faith.”
From cramps to cramps-in-the-spirit, from exhausted laughter to prayerful encouragement, the 1975 TFC men’s team embodied the relentless soul of the game — long before it became trendy to track “xG” or press with analytics.
So this April 26, they won’t be lacing up for another 37 hours, but they will be celebrating one of the most incredible feats ever pulled off on a Georgia pitch.
