Major League Soccer’s most expensive player finally got his feet wet in Atlanta.
Atlanta United and its fans got their first glimpse Sunday of Ezequiel Barco, the 19-year-old from Argentina who United reportedly paid a record $15 million transfer fee this offseason. Barco injured his quad before the regular season began and made his first appearance for Atlanta coming off the bench in the 69th minute of a matchup inside Mercedes-Benz Stadium with New York FC.
More than 45,000 attended the high-intesity match between the Eastern Conference’s top two teams that resulted in a 2-2 draw, but it was Barco’s budding star power that is likely to have the most-lasting impact.
The midfielder showed flashes of the talent that makes him one of the world’s top young players, though he also appeared rusty after being sidelined for more than a month.
