The 16 games left in the GHSA soccer season, which concludes this week at McEachern, Duluth, and Mercer University in Macon, feature legendary schools and championship candidates in each.
Since the GHSA started giving out titles in 1966 for boys’ teams and 1992 for girls’ teams, teams that compete in the season’s final matches have won a total of 70 championships. Thirteen teams compete all week for program-first state titles, a tribute to the state’s growing popularity of the beautiful game at the prep level.
For the first time, boys titles will be attempted by Campbell (7A boys), Kennesaw Mountain (7A boys), Sprayberry (6A boys), River Ridge (6A boys), Hebron Christian (3A boys), Columbus (3A boys), Toombs County (2A boys), Model (2A boys), and Atkinson County (A Division II boys). Program-first girls state championships will be pursued by Lake Oconee Academy (A-Division II girls), Mount Paran (2A girls), Buford (7A girls), and Cambridge (5A girls).
