If you weren’t out at the Turner Soccer Complex in Athens this past weekend, you missed a certified clinical performance from our boys in red and black. While the senior squad has the city buzzing, Atlanta United 2 just put on a tactical clinic, sending a loud and clear message to the rest of the MLS Next Pro Eastern Conference with a definitive 3-0 shutdown of rival Chicago Fire FC II.
The first half was a tense, technical chess match where both defensive backlines stood tall. Chicago threatened early in the 27th minute when Milan Napoe found himself isolated one-on-one with our man between the posts, James Donaldson. But Donaldson came up huge, sliding to the edge of his area to make a stellar parry. Atlanta’s talisman Arif Kovac nearly unlocked the gridlock just before the break, shifting past four defenders only to see his left-footed rocket skim the top of the crossbar.
Second Half: The Kovac Show and Stoppage-Time Chaos
Whatever adjustments the coaching staff made at halftime completely unlocked the floodgates. Donaldson had to make one more spectacular fingertip save to deny a point-blank Hugo Berg header, and that defensive resilience instantly shifted momentum downfield.
In the 54th minute, Santiago Pita—making a triumphant return from the injury list—whipped a beautiful, bending ball from the corner flag. Mohamed Cisset controlled it brilliantly with his chest, dropping it right into the path of Arif Kovac. Our star forward made no mistake, smashing a venomous volley into the roof of the net to claim his league-leading 9th goal of the regular season.
As the clock ticked into stoppage time, Chicago threw numbers forward looking for a desperation equalizer. Instead, they walked directly into an execution squad.
- 92nd Minute: Santiago Pita won a gritty ground duel at midfield, popping the ball loose to Enzo Dovlo. Dovlo shielded off his marker, turned on the jets to outrun a sliding challenge, and coolly slotted it past Jason Nemo to double the lead.
- 10 Seconds Later: Before Chicago could even process the second blow, Liam Butts intercepted a lazy touch right from the ensuing kickoff. He fed Pita, who exploded through the high line and sliding-kicked a clinical finish into the bottom corner to make it 3-0 before the away fans could even blink.
Three goals, another clean sheet, and a dominant statement of intent from the next generation of the 5-Stripes!
What’s Next for the 5-Stripes?
The victory moves Atlanta United 2 to a strong 7-4-1 record (22 points) on the season. The boys won’t have long to celebrate, as they return right back to the pitch at the Turner Soccer Complex to host regional rivals Chattanooga FC. Expect high intensity, tight spaces, and another massive chance to protect home turf.
