Atlanta United fans finally got to see a comeback story nearly three years in the making.
After rising through Barcelona’s famed La Masia academy, suffering a devastating ACL injury and spending years away from competitive soccer, Adrian Gill made his MLS debut Saturday night as Atlanta United defeated Red Bull New York 2-1 at Mercedes-Benz Stadium.
For the 20-year-old midfielder, simply stepping onto the field was a milestone. Starting 90 minutes and helping Atlanta secure three points made it even more memorable.
“It’s been a long time since I’ve been dreaming about this,” Gill said after the match. “Coming here and getting a new opportunity and finally getting to debut, start, play 90 [minutes], it’s incredible.”
The performance was more than an emotional moment. It showed Atlanta may have uncovered another valuable piece from within its own development system.
From La Masia to Atlanta United
Gill was once considered one of the most promising young American prospects in the game.
His development took him to FC Barcelona’s La Masia academy, where he earned a contract with Barcelona’s B team in 2022. But just as his professional career appeared ready to take off, an ACL injury in 2023 changed everything.
Nearly three years away from the soccer field and two knee surgeries later, Gill found himself looking for another opportunity.
That opportunity came when he joined Atlanta United in February 2026.
Rather than rushing him into the First Team, Atlanta gave Gill the chance to rebuild his confidence and rhythm with Atlanta United 2.
That decision proved important.
Gill started all 16 of his appearances for ATL UTD 2 during the season, giving him the minutes needed to rediscover what it felt like to play full matches and trust his surgically repaired knee.
An Unexpected Call From Tata Martino
Gill’s MLS debut came under circumstances few could have predicted.
With Jay Fortune and Will Reilly dealing with injuries ahead of the Red Bulls match, head coach Tata Martino turned to Gill to fill the defensive midfield role.
The timing was almost surreal.
Gill said he was playing with Atlanta United 2 on Wednesday before joining the First Team on Thursday. By Friday, he was informed that he would start against New York.
“[I was] pretty shocked,” Gill said. “Wednesday, I was playing with the 2s, then on Thursday they told me I was with the First Team, and on Friday, I was [told I was] starting.”
Instead of looking overwhelmed, Gill looked ready.
Playing as Atlanta’s lone defensive midfielder against a Red Bulls side known for its aggressive pressing, the youngster completed 41 of 43 passes, an impressive 95.3 percent completion rate.
That level of composure was particularly notable considering this was his first MLS appearance.
Atlanta United 2 Helped Prepare Gill for the Moment
While Saturday represented Gill’s arrival on the MLS stage, the work behind the scenes had been happening all season.
Gill credited Atlanta United 2 head coach Jose Silva and Director of Methodology Javier Perez for helping him rebuild his confidence and understanding of the defensive midfield position.
The opportunity to play regularly with ATL UTD 2 allowed Gill to experience the physical demands of 90-minute matches again while continuing to develop his tactical game.
Martino also praised the club’s ability to use the second team as a development environment for players who may eventually be needed by the First Team.
“He works well. When he goes down to play with the second team, he does well,” Martino said. “He was able to come in and step up.”

That pathway could become increasingly important for Atlanta as the club continues developing young players capable of making the jump to MLS.

Gill’s performance also earned praise from one of the players alongside him in midfield.
Tristan Muyumba delivered a standout performance in Atlanta’s comeback win, but he was quick to highlight Gill’s contribution.
“He played a wonderful game,” Muyumba said. “Tonight he showed his quality, and I’m really, really happy for him.”
For Gill, having the trust of teammates after such a long road back may be just as important as the statistics.
The midfielder entered Saturday having already proven himself with Atlanta United 2. Now he has shown that he can handle the demands of MLS.
What This Means for Atlanta United
Gill’s debut could be an important development for the 5-Stripes beyond the emotional significance of his comeback.
Atlanta United has invested heavily in developing young players, and Gill represents another example of that pathway working.
His ability to play as a defensive midfielder gives Martino another option in an area where injuries have created challenges. More importantly, Gill’s passing range and composure could make him an intriguing option when Atlanta needs to control possession and build through the middle.
His MLS debut also demonstrates the value of Atlanta United 2.
Gill didn’t simply jump from rehabilitation into an MLS starting lineup. He spent months playing meaningful minutes with the second team, rebuilding his fitness and confidence before his opportunity arrived.
And now, after nearly three years away from the game he loves, Gill has his first MLS appearance.
The comeback is complete.
But Gill isn’t satisfied yet.
“Obviously, there’s so much more work to do, so we’re not finished at all,” Gill said.
For Atlanta United fans, that might be the most exciting part.
