The United States Olympic Men’s Soccer Team is enjoying its first Olympic experience in sixteen years, and with their 3-0 victory over Guinea at the Stade Geoffroy-Guichard on Tuesday, they have guaranteed their place in the competition.
The USA secured second place in Group A and set up a quarterfinal matchup with Morocco on Friday, August 2 at the legendary Parc des Princes in Paris with its second convincing victory in four days.
The U.S. (2W-1L-0D) has been on a roll since losing 3-0 to France, the team that won the group, in the first game. Five different players have scored seven goals, and the team has pulled away early with strong first halves.
The Americans scored twice in the first 30 minutes of their 4-1 triumph over New Zealand on July 27. Almost simultaneously, they led 2-1 against Guinea on Tuesday. The Americans were represented by Djordje Mihailovic and Kevin Paredes (twice), while goalie Patrick Schulte recorded his first Olympic shutout with six saves.
As a result, the United States is making it into the Olympic quarterfinals for just the second time since the current tournament format was created in 1960 and for the first time since the historic fourth-place finish in 2000.
