ATLANTA GEORGIA–After expressing his willingness for a pay cut so that he plays alongside good friend and countryman Lionel Messi, FC Barcelona on Monday announced they are set to sign to a two-year deal Manchester City star striker Sergio Aguero.
According to reports, Aguero is set to join Barcelona on a free transfer when his contract expires next month.
The Spanish club revealed Aguero, 32, has agreed to a two-year deal with a €100m buyout clause after announcing earlier this season that he would end his 10-year association with City.
The veteran Argentine striker played his last game for Manchester City as a second-half substitute in City’s Champions League final defeat to Chelsea on Saturday.
Aguero made the statement of his willingness for a pay cut after Barca officials expressed willingness to hire him to play alongside Messi, whose contract with the Spanish football club is set to end on June 30.
While Messi, 33 has yet to state a contract extension with Barca, the Catala club is confident the Argentine football superstar will sign a two-year contract extension with them.
Messi and Aguero have been friends, international teammates, for the past 20 years.
The two were playing together when Argentina won the U20 World Cup in 2005 and were gold medal winners at the Olympic Games in 2008 with the Albiceleste.
During his stay with Manchester City, Aguero scored 260 goals including the title-clinching goal when they won the English top-flight in 2011-12 for the first time in 44 years.
