This season, Columbus’ southside is home to some of the top high school soccer matches. With a 5-0 record in Region AA play, the boys soccer team from Spencer High School has an undefeated 6-0 record thus far. Since taking over as head coach a little over a year ago, Quantavis Allen has been quite impressed with the team’s development.

“I’m just happy to witness the results of all their hard work. I do know that many of the people who approached me when I initially started the job expressed to me how passionate they were about soccer. How badly they truly desired to take first place in Region and attempt a State run. I’ll work just as hard as they do, I told them, and we’ll attempt to make a point,” Allen remarked.

The Greenwave defeated ACE handily this season and took home the Region 2-AA Championship, so they didn’t just make a statement—they made an impact.

“Man, that was awesome. Senior left forward Noel Leon stated, “It was the best time, and that was the best part of the season right now.

“I believe their main goal was to exact some small retribution on ACE. If my memory serves me correctly, ACE defeated Spencer 3-1 last year. Thus, while we were pleased to win this year, we ultimately defeated them 3-0, according to Allen.

What’s the Greenwave’s secret to winning that allows them to subtly dominate the opposition? The boys say it’s as easy as having a never-say-die attitude and playing for each other.

“Actually playing as a team is the key to success, man. Leon remarked, “I’m fighting hard and doing everything I can.”
