Atlanta’s NWSL era officially has a name.

Atlanta City FC will become the National Women’s Soccer League’s 17th team when the club begins play in 2028, and on Sept. 28, Atlanta finally got its first look at the identity that will represent the city on the national women’s soccer stage.

The club unveiled its name, crest and colors, officially moving the project from an expansion announcement to something Atlanta soccer fans can actually see, wear and rally behind.

And the message behind the identity is unmistakably Atlanta.

Atlanta City FC Unveils Its Identity

The club’s branding is built around the idea of Atlanta as a city that continues to rise.

A launch video narrated by ESPN’s Andraya Carter connects the club’s identity to Atlanta’s history of overcoming adversity and turning it into momentum.

That theme is represented visually through the club’s crest.

A phoenix sits at the center of the design, with feather details incorporated into its wings. Tree roots extend from the base of the crest, representing what the club describes as a sense of quiet strength, while a subtle “A” connects the design back to Atlanta.

The color palette is equally tied to the city and state:

  • Atlanta Red
  • Georgia Peach
  • Black Char
  • Platinum Metallic
  • Dogwood White

It’s a visual identity designed to look distinctly Atlanta rather than simply becoming another NWSL expansion badge.

The NWSL officially announced the unveiling Sept. 28, marking another major step toward Atlanta City FC’s 2028 debut.

Atlanta’s NWSL Story Is Finally Taking Shape

For Atlanta soccer fans, the importance of this announcement goes beyond a logo.

Atlanta has already established itself as one of the country’s major soccer markets, but the city has been without a top-flight professional women’s team.

That changed when the NWSL awarded Atlanta its 17th franchise, with the club scheduled to begin competition in 2028.

Atlanta Soccer News covered that announcement earlier this year, when the arrival of professional women’s soccer officially put Atlanta on the NWSL map.

Now there is a name.

There is a crest.

There are colors.

And there is a growing identity for supporters to connect with before Atlanta City FC ever plays its first competitive match.

The Goal Isn’t Just to Show Up

Atlanta City FC president of soccer Mauricio Culebro made it clear that the club isn’t approaching 2028 simply as an expansion project.

The stated ambition is to build a championship-caliber club that reflects Atlanta and becomes a source of pride for supporters.

That creates an interesting challenge for the organization.

The club has nearly two years before its first competitive match, giving Atlanta City FC time to build its sporting operation, develop its supporter culture and establish connections throughout Georgia’s existing women’s soccer community.

The NWSL itself continues to expand its national footprint, with the league currently featuring 16 teams and Atlanta set to become its 17th.

For Atlanta, that means the countdown to 2028 isn’t simply about waiting for opening kickoff.

The foundation is already being built.

What This Means for Atlanta Soccer

Atlanta City FC gives girls and women playing soccer across Georgia another professional destination to look toward.

That’s significant for a soccer market with an enormous youth and college presence.

The pathway from youth soccer to college soccer has long existed across Georgia. The arrival of an NWSL team adds another level to that pathway — the possibility of seeing elite women’s professional soccer played locally and potentially creating opportunities for players, coaches, staff and the broader soccer industry.

It also gives Atlanta another professional soccer identity.

Atlanta United helped establish the city’s MLS culture. Atlanta City FC now has the opportunity to build its own version of that connection within the women’s game.

The club doesn’t have to copy Atlanta United’s formula.

In fact, one of the most interesting parts of this project will be watching Atlanta City FC determine what its own supporter culture looks like.

And that process starts now.

ASN Take

The biggest story here isn’t the phoenix. It’s what Atlanta City FC has the opportunity to build around it.

The crest gives supporters something tangible, but the real identity of this club will ultimately come from the people who fill the stadium, the players who wear the shirt and the connection the organization builds with Atlanta’s existing soccer community.

The timing also matters.

Atlanta City FC won’t kick off until 2028, which means the club has a rare runway to establish its culture before its first competitive match.

That should make the next two years particularly interesting.

Who becomes the first Atlanta City FC signing?

Who leads the team?

Where will the club play?

What will matchday look like?

And perhaps most importantly, how quickly can the organization become part of the existing Atlanta soccer ecosystem rather than simply being added to it?

Those are questions that will shape Atlanta City FC far more than any color palette.

For now, though, Atlanta finally has something it has been waiting for:

a name to rally around.

Welcome to Atlanta City FC.

What’s Next for Atlanta City FC?

Atlanta City FC is scheduled to begin NWSL play in 2028.

Supporters don’t have to wait until then to start connecting with the club. Official Atlanta City FC merchandise is already available through the NWSL Shop.

As the organization continues building toward its inaugural season, Atlanta soccer fans can expect more details surrounding the club’s roster, coaching staff, home venue, supporter experience and overall sporting structure.

The wait for the first match continues.

The building process has already begun.
