The Beer City Cup Asheville once again delivered the kind of soccer weekend that makes the tournament more than just a competition.
The 16th annual Beer City Cup Asheville — and the 25th Beer City Cup overall — brought 126 teams to Buncombe County Sports Park in Western North Carolina from September 4-6. Along with the competition came the familiar mix of soccer, community, rivalries and plenty of stories that carried well beyond the final whistle.
And for Atlanta soccer, there was plenty to follow.
Several Metro Atlanta clubs made deep runs across the tournament’s divisions, with Tequila Mockingbird standing out as one of the weekend’s biggest success stories.
Tequila Mockingbird Keeps Winning
Tequila Mockingbird arrived in Asheville after winning the 2026 Savannah tournament and left with another championship.
The Atlanta club defeated fellow Atlanta side Panthers 3-1 in the Women’s Premier final, adding another trophy to a growing run of success.
Panthers, who won the 2025 Savannah tournament and reached last year’s Asheville final, once again came within reach of the title. But Tequila Mockingbird found the breakthrough it needed and added an insurance goal with 15 minutes remaining to close out the victory.
The Pioneers finished third, while Mustard Tigers of Charlotte and JAXtive of Jacksonville rounded out the division.
Tequila Mockingbird wasn’t finished there.
The club also captured the Coed Premier championship, defeating Atlanta’s Akatsuki after Akatsuki battled back from a 3-0 deficit but couldn’t find the late equalizer.
That gave Tequila Mockingbird its first Asheville double — another chapter in what is becoming an impressive club history.
The road to the Coed Premier title wasn’t easy, either. Tequila Mockingbird edged Queen City FC 3-2 in the semifinal and defeated Carolina Elite 2-1 in the quarterfinal before eventually getting past Akatsuki in the final.
Three one-goal knockout wins. Three times finding a way through.
Atlanta’s Over-30 Teams Deliver
The Atlanta presence extended well beyond the Premier divisions.
Tariye Ekineh United claimed the Over 30 championship, defeating Isoceles FC of Hillsborough, North Carolina, in a penalty shootout.
The final ended 1-1 after Isoceles took a first-half lead before Tariye Ekineh United responded early in the second half. The Atlanta club then held its nerve in penalties to secure the championship and a $2,500 prize.
The run included a 2-1 semifinal victory over Waterfall FC of Winston-Salem.
The tournament also gave Atlanta plenty to look forward to in the older divisions.
In the Over 40 Premier, the San Diego Silverbacks, an Atlanta-based club, reached the final against Chivas Viejas of Nashville. After the teams had drawn 2-2 in group play, Chivas Viejas won the rematch 2-1 to claim the title.
The Silverbacks weren’t able to complete the repeat, but their run continued a strong presence in the division.
Lusitano Continues Its Asheville Run
Atlanta’s Lusitano once again found itself on top in the Over 55 division.
The club defeated Metro Atlanta rival Atlanta FC 6-1 in the championship match to add another Beer City Cup title to its collection.
Lusitano dominated its way through the 11-team division, with only Madra Rua of Charleston managing to seriously test the Atlanta side during group play.
Atlanta FC also had an impressive tournament, advancing to the final before running into a Lusitano team that once again proved difficult to stop.
And the Atlanta success didn’t stop there.
Trident FC, representing Florida, Atlanta and South Carolina, successfully defended its Asheville Over 60 championship, while Atlanta-based teams also featured throughout the knockout stages.
A Tournament Built Around Community
The results matter, but the Beer City Cup has always been about more than the trophies.
The Asheville event brought together teams from across the Southeast and beyond, with divisions ranging from Premier competition to Over 65. The tournament’s mix of competitive soccer, longtime friendships and club rivalries is a big part of what keeps teams coming back.
That was especially evident in the Over 40 Division 2 final.
Altamont’s Finest and Internacional, both from Asheville, battled to a 1-1 draw through extra time before Altamont’s Finest won the championship in penalties. Fans surrounded the penalty area, creating a scene that captured the community atmosphere the tournament has built over the years.
For Atlanta clubs, that same combination of competition and camaraderie was on display throughout the weekend.
From Tequila Mockingbird’s double championship to Tariye Ekineh United’s Over 30 title, Lusitano’s continued success and deep runs from several other Atlanta teams, the city once again had a significant footprint at Beer City Cup Asheville.
What This Means
Atlanta’s soccer community continues to show that its depth extends well beyond the professional and college levels.
The Beer City Cup brought together clubs from across the region, and Atlanta teams were right in the middle of the action. Some left with trophies, others came up just short, but all contributed to another weekend built around the game and the communities surrounding it.
And with the Beer City Cup returning to Atlanta November 7-8, the Asheville results could be just the beginning.
The next chapter is coming home.
