Miguel Almirón added another unforgettable chapter to his Atlanta United legacy Sunday night.
The Atlanta United captain delivered his 42nd and 43rd assists for the club, breaking the 5-Stripes’ all-time assist record as Atlanta earned a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Sporting Kansas City at Mercedes-Benz Stadium. The result marked Atlanta’s third consecutive win and second straight victory at home as the club continues to build momentum.
It was a night filled with history, attacking quality and, ultimately, a determined defensive stand. For Almirón, though, it was another reminder of why his name will always be synonymous with Atlanta United.
Almirón Makes History as Atlanta Takes Control
Atlanta United wasted little time establishing control of the match. The 5-Stripes pushed Sporting Kansas City deep into its own half, keeping their defensive line high and dominating possession while looking for opportunities to exploit space behind the visitors’ defense.
The breakthrough arrived in the 13th minute, and fittingly, Almirón was at the center of it.
The Paraguayan captain created separation from his defender before delivering a dangerous cross toward the back post, where Tomás Jacob arrived to fire a first-time volley into the open net. The goal gave Atlanta a 1-0 lead, but it also delivered a historic milestone: Almirón’s 42nd assist moved him past Brooks Lennon to become Atlanta United’s all-time assist leader.
The 5-Stripes kept coming.
After Almirón saw a breakaway effort saved and Elías Báez helped create another dangerous moment from a set piece, Atlanta doubled its advantage in the 24th minute. Báez flicked a header on from a corner, and Fafa Picault finished into the bottom corner to make it 2-0.
Almirón was credited with the secondary assist, giving him 43 assists in an Atlanta United shirt and adding even more distance to his new club record.
Atlanta nearly added a third before halftime when Almirón struck the post. By the break, the numbers reflected the home side’s dominance, with Atlanta holding a significant edge in expected goals and limiting Sporting Kansas City to very little in the attacking third.
The captain had already made history, but his night was also about much more than the numbers. His movement, creativity and final ball helped give Atlanta the kind of attacking control the 17s have been hoping to see.
New Faces and Familiar Heroes
Sunday night also represented another step forward for Atlanta United’s evolving roster.
Paulo Díaz made his first start for the 5-Stripes, partnering with Júnior Alonso in central defense after joining the club during the summer transfer window. The Chilean international delivered a composed performance before being substituted in the second half, finishing with eight interceptions.

Atlanta Holds On Under Late Pressure
The second half presented a very different challenge.
Sporting Kansas City gradually increased its energy and possession, although Atlanta initially did a good job limiting meaningful chances. That changed in the 70th minute when a deflected clearance fell to Stephen Afrifa, who struck the ball cleanly to cut Atlanta’s lead to 2-1.
Suddenly, the final stages became a test of the 5-Stripes’ resolve.
Tata Martino responded by bringing on Stian Gregersen to add stability to the defense. An injury to substitute Luke Brennan later forced another adjustment, with Matt Edwards entering as Atlanta looked to protect its narrow advantage.
Sporting Kansas City continued to push forward, particularly through crosses into the box, but Atlanta refused to break. The visitors created several headed opportunities, yet the 5-Stripes stood firm when it mattered most.
It wasn’t always comfortable. It wasn’t always pretty. But Atlanta found a way.
That ability to grind out results has become one of the most encouraging signs during the club’s recent three-match winning streak.
Standouts: Almirón and Muyumba Lead the Way
Almirón was the obvious headline-maker. On a night when he became Atlanta United’s all-time leading assister, the captain was dangerous throughout, repeatedly finding space and delivering the final ball that created Atlanta’s first two goals.
But Tristan Muyumba once again delivered an outstanding performance in midfield. The Frenchman completed all 29 of his passes in the first half and finished the match with an incredible 48-for-49 passing performance, good for 97.9 percent accuracy.
Muyumba’s recent form has been one of the major stories behind Atlanta’s turnaround. ASN recently covered his remarkable scoring streak and MLS Team of the Matchday recognition as the midfielder continues to emerge as one of the club’s most consistent difference-makers.
Meanwhile, Jacob continued his own impressive run. His opening goal made him the first Atlanta United defender to score in consecutive regular-season matches since Brooks Lennon in July 2023. He becomes the fifth defender in club history to accomplish the feat, joining Andrew Gutman, Juan Purata, Caleb Wiley and Lennon.

Atlanta United still has plenty of work ahead, but the mood around the club is changing.
The 5-Stripes have shown over the past three matches that they can create chances, protect leads and battle through difficult moments. Sunday’s win was another test, and while Sporting Kansas City made the closing stages uncomfortable, Atlanta once again found a way to finish the job.
Almirón’s record-breaking night will deservedly grab the headlines. Forty-three assists and counting is a remarkable achievement for a player who has already given Atlanta United so many iconic moments.
But perhaps the biggest takeaway is the team result. Atlanta is winning again, and the 17s have something to believe in as the season enters a crucial stretch.
