Atlanta United 2 left Fort Lauderdale with an extra point Friday night after battling Inter Miami CF II to a 1-1 draw before winning the penalty shootout 5-4.
The result had a little bit of everything for Atlanta.
The 5-Stripes controlled much of the early play, fell behind against the run of play just before halftime, found an equalizer through Patrick Weah, and then survived a dramatic penalty shootout to claim the extra point.
At the center of it all was Cameron Dunbar, who delivered one of his most productive performances of the season.
Dunbar recorded eight key passes, setting a new Atlanta United 2 record, while also providing the assist on Weah’s equalizer for his league-leading 11th assist.
It was an evening that showcased both Atlanta’s attacking quality and its ability to respond when the match turned against it.
Cameron Dunbar Sets the Tone for Atlanta United 2
Atlanta United 2 started brightly and controlled much of the opening portion of the match.
Inter Miami CF II had the first major opportunity in the fifth minute when Rondell White’s free kick found Mateo Saja on the right side of the box.
Saja quickly picked out Diego Rey in the middle, but Rey’s first-time left-footed attempt curled narrowly beyond the near post.
Atlanta nearly answered in the 32nd minute through Dominik Chong Qui.
After receiving a long ball from Matthew Senanou, Chong Qui exchanged passes with Dunbar before driving toward the edge of the box.
He beat two defenders with a series of touches and changes of direction before shifting onto his left foot and aiming for the far post.
The effort narrowly missed.
For all of Atlanta’s early control, however, Miami found a way to strike first.
Miami Takes the Lead Against the Run of Play
The breakthrough came in the final minute of first-half stoppage time.
After Miami cleared an Atlanta free kick near its own box, Theo Vorenkamp immediately turned defense into attack, releasing Idoh Zeltzer-Zubida down the left.
Zeltzer-Zubida carried the ball almost the entire length of the field with D.D. Sibrian defending one-on-one.
Once inside the box, he cut onto his right foot and fired a shot into the bottom-right corner.
Miami went into halftime ahead 1-0, despite Atlanta having controlled much of the opening 45 minutes.
That left Atlanta with a familiar challenge: find a response without allowing Miami to dictate the match in transition.
Atlanta United 2 Finds Its Equalizer
Atlanta kept pushing after halftime.
Santiago Pita nearly pulled the 5-Stripes level in the 64th minute with an individual effort that showed his ability to create something from nothing.
Starting near the right sideline, Pita used a fake pass and turn to get forward before beating a defender with a ball roll and body feint.
He continued toward the box, stuttered in front of another defender and cut inside onto his left foot.
The resulting shot was hard and low but drifted just wide of the left post.
Atlanta finally got its breakthrough in the 78th minute.
And once again, Dunbar was the creator.
Dunbar Finds Patrick Weah for the Equalizer
With the ball on the right wing, Dunbar used a body feint to beat his defender before driving toward the goal line.
He spotted Patrick Weah arriving at the near post and delivered a perfectly weighted pass.
Weah did the rest.
From just a foot away, he finished first-time to bring Atlanta level at 1-1.
The assist gave Dunbar his league-leading 11th of the season and capped a performance in which he produced a club-record eight key passes.
That number is especially notable because it illustrates just how frequently Atlanta was able to create dangerous attacking situations through Dunbar.
But the 5-Stripes weren’t finished chasing the winner.
Atlanta Nearly Steals It Late
Atlanta had a golden opportunity to complete the comeback in the 86th minute.
Once again, Dunbar was involved.
After Weah played a line-breaking pass, Dunbar and Arif Kovac found themselves in a two-versus-two situation inside the box.
With an opportunity to shoot, Dunbar instead chose to slide the ball across to Kovac in a central position.
Kovac hit the shot hard toward goal.
The ball crashed off the top of the crossbar and bounced back into play.
It was inches away from being the winning moment.
Instead, the match headed to a penalty shootout.
Atlanta United 2 Wins Its First Penalty Shootout of the Season
The shootout was just as dramatic.
Both teams missed twice during the initial five rounds, sending the contest into sudden death.
Then came the moment Atlanta needed.
On Miami’s seventh penalty, Judeson Adeclat sent his attempt to the left.
Ransom read it correctly, diving the same direction and making a strong save.
That opened the door for Atlanta.
Daniel Chica stepped up with the chance to finish the shootout.
He calmly placed his penalty into the top-right corner.
Atlanta won the shootout 5-4, earning its first extra point of the season.
It was a fitting ending to a match in which the 5-Stripes repeatedly had to respond to adversity.
What This Means for Atlanta United 2
Atlanta United 2 moves to 12-8-5 with 42 points following the result.
The biggest positive may be the team’s ability to turn a match it could have lost into a result on the road.
Atlanta controlled significant portions of the match, created opportunities, fell behind late in the first half, and still found a way back through Weah.
Dunbar’s performance deserves plenty of attention, too.
Eight key passes and a league-leading 11 assists show how important he has become to Atlanta’s attacking production. His involvement in the equalizer and late chance for Kovac further underlined his influence.
The next step for Atlanta is converting more of those opportunities before matches reach the shootout stage.

Atlanta United 2 deserved more than to leave Fort Lauderdale empty-handed, and it made sure that didn’t happen.
The 5-Stripes created chances, responded after conceding, and ultimately showed enough composure in the shootout to secure the extra point.
Cameron Dunbar was the standout.
Eight key passes and another assist make the numbers impossible to overlook, but his influence went beyond the stat sheet. Atlanta repeatedly looked dangerous when he was involved in the attack.
The biggest takeaway is that Atlanta showed resilience.
It fell behind despite controlling much of the early match, found a way back, nearly won it late, and then handled the pressure of sudden-death penalties.
That’s a point Atlanta can take with it.
