ATHENS, Ga. (June 11, 2025) – Atlanta United 2 suffered a 1-0 defeat to Huntsville City FC on a humid and rainy Wednesday evening at Turner Soccer Complex.1 Despite the loss, the match saw several notable debuts, with Academy players Ayo Akintobi and DD Sibrian making their professional bows, and Toto Majub also making his first appearance for ATL UTD 2.2 Patrick Weah earned his first start of the season.
Atlanta started brightly, creating an early threat in the third minute when Javier Armas dispossessed a Huntsville midfielder, setting up Moises Tablante who was fouled. Armas’s subsequent free-kick was well saved by Huntsville’s Erik Lauta. Goalkeeper Johnathan Ransom was called into action in the 13th minute, making a strong save to deny Blake Bowen’s far-post shot. Another free-kick opportunity in the 29th minute, this time taken by Ryan Carmichael, curled just wide.
ATL UTD 2 maintained much of the first-half possession, with a promising chance in the 37th minute when Gabriel Wesseh curled a shot just wide after a quick pass from Rodrigo Neri. However, on the stroke of halftime, Atlanta conceded a penalty via a handball by Adyn Torres. Christian Koffi converted from the spot, sending Ransom the wrong way and giving Huntsville a 1-0 lead at the break.3
The second half saw more midfield play, but Atlanta found an opportunity in the 67th minute.4 Armas’s chip found Neri, whose header was saved by a diving Lauta. In the 82nd minute, a cross from Armas found Sal Mazzaferro, whose header went just over the crossbar. Atlanta’s final push in stoppage time saw a low-driven free-kick from Wesseh into the box, but despite shouts for a handball, Huntsville cleared, and the whistle blew for full-time.5
