Atlanta United has a major midfield boost heading into Wednesday night’s rivalry match with Orlando City SC.
Jay Fortune is officially off the Atlanta United availability report and eligible to return, giving head coach Tata Martino another option in the center of the field after the midfielder missed nearly two months with hamstring issues.
Fortune last appeared for the 5-Stripes on July 17 against Nashville SC. Since then, he has dealt with two separate hamstring injuries, one to each leg.
His return comes at an important moment for Atlanta, with the midfield suddenly becoming one of the biggest storylines surrounding Wednesday’s matchup.
Jay Fortune Could Return, But Expect Managed Minutes
Fortune’s availability does not necessarily mean Atlanta will immediately turn to him for 90 minutes.
Martino said Tuesday that Fortune may not be ready to play an entire match, but the midfielder could see action against Orlando.
That would still represent a meaningful boost for Atlanta.
Fortune gives the 5-Stripes another physical and defensive presence in the middle of the field while also providing Martino with more flexibility when managing the match.
If Fortune is limited, Atlanta has several other midfield options available.
Tristan Muyumba, Adrian Gill and Will Reilly could all be asked to handle significant minutes in the center of the pitch, depending on Martino’s approach and how Fortune’s return is managed.
For Atlanta, the priority will be finding the right balance between getting Fortune back onto the field and avoiding an unnecessary workload in his first appearance since July.
Cooper Sanchez Out, Steven Alzate Questionable
While Fortune’s return provides positive news, Atlanta’s midfield situation is not completely settled.
Cooper Sanchez has been added to the availability report and will miss the Orlando City match while in concussion protocol.
Sanchez has become an important part of Atlanta’s midfield rotation, making his absence another factor Martino will have to account for.
Steven Alzate is also a new addition to the report and is listed as questionable with an illness.
If Alzate is unavailable, Atlanta could be forced to rely even more heavily on its remaining midfield group.
That makes Fortune’s return particularly valuable.
Galoppo Still Waiting on Visa Clearance
New midfielder Giuliano Galoppo remains unavailable as he continues working through the visa process required to gain eligibility.
That means Atlanta’s midfield options remain somewhat limited despite Fortune’s return.
The 5-Stripes have added pieces to the position recently, but not all of those players are currently available to Martino. Fortune’s clearance therefore comes at a useful time as Atlanta prepares for another demanding match.
Wednesday’s rivalry with Orlando could put significant pressure on Atlanta’s midfield to control the center of the field, particularly during transitions.
Having Fortune available—even if only for a portion of the match—gives Martino another tool to work with.
Atlanta United Availability Report — Tuesday, September 8
| Player | Injury/Reason | Status |
|---|---|---|
| Steven Alzate | Illness | Questionable |
| Giuliano Galoppo | Visa process | Out |
| Cooper Sanchez | Concussion Protocol | Out |
Jay Fortune is no longer listed on the report and is eligible to play.
What This Means for Atlanta United
The biggest takeaway is simple: Atlanta United has Jay Fortune back, but the midfield is still dealing with availability questions.
Fortune’s return could allow Martino to ease him back into action rather than immediately asking him to carry a full workload. That approach would give Atlanta some additional midfield depth without putting unnecessary pressure on a player returning from a lengthy spell away.
At the same time, Sanchez’s absence and Alzate’s questionable status could dramatically change the midfield rotation.
For Atlanta, Fortune’s availability is a boost—but exactly how much of a boost may depend on how many minutes Martino believes he can safely handle.
The Orlando City rivalry provides a difficult environment for a comeback, but if Fortune can contribute, his return could give Atlanta some much-needed stability in the middle of the park.

ASN TAKE
Jay Fortune’s return is good news, but Atlanta United’s midfield remains a moving target.
Getting Fortune back into the squad gives Tata Martino another experienced option after a long injury absence. The key will be managing his minutes rather than expecting him to immediately return to his previous workload.
With Cooper Sanchez out and Steven Alzate questionable, Fortune’s availability could become even more important than initially expected.
For Atlanta, Wednesday’s match isn’t simply about getting one player back. It’s about finding the right midfield combination with several pieces either unavailable or potentially limited.
