Atlanta United has made a major statement as the club gears up for the second half of the 2026 MLS season.
The 5-Stripes officially announced the signing of Chilean international defender Paulo Díaz from Argentine powerhouse River Plate, bringing one of South America’s most accomplished center backs to Atlanta. Díaz joins Atlanta United on a contract through the 2027 season, with club options for 2028 and 2029, pending the receipt of his International Transfer Certificate (ITC) and P-1 Visa.

A Proven Winner Arrives in Atlanta
Chief Soccer Officer and Sporting Director Chris Henderson believes Díaz brings far more than defensive quality.
“Paulo is a player who will bring toughness, competition and a winning mentality to our group,” Henderson said. “He’s a center back who has a good feel for the game and understands the moments to be aggressive or hold the line defensively. He brings great experience at the club and international level and fits the style that we want to play at Atlanta United.”

Across an impressive professional career, Díaz has made 364 club appearances, recording 27 goals and 11 assists while winning eight major trophies in Chile and Argentina.
Championship Experience from River Plate
Most recently, Díaz spent seven highly successful seasons with River Plate, one of South America’s most iconic clubs.
During his time in Buenos Aires, he made 222 appearances, scored 13 goals, and helped River Plate capture seven trophies, including:
- Two Argentine Primera División titles (2021, 2023)
- Argentine Cup (2018-19)
- Two Argentine Supercopas
- Two Trofeo de Campeones titles
That championship pedigree is exactly what Atlanta United hopes will strengthen a defense looking for greater consistency during the final stretch of the MLS campaign.

Before becoming a River Plate standout, Díaz built an impressive résumé throughout South America.
He began his professional career with Palestino in Chile before moving to Colo-Colo, where he was part of a league championship-winning squad.
His next stop was San Lorenzo in Argentina, where he developed into one of the country’s top defenders. Interestingly, during the 2016 Argentine league final, Díaz’s San Lorenzo side fell to a Lanús team led by none other than current Atlanta United star Miguel Almirón.
Following his stint in Argentina, Díaz spent a season with Saudi Pro League club Al-Ahli, adding international experience before returning to South America with River Plate.
International Leader for Chile
Díaz also brings significant experience on the international stage.
Since making his Chile debut in 2015, he has earned 56 senior international caps, scoring once while representing La Roja in World Cup qualifying and Copa América competition.
That level of experience should prove valuable as Atlanta United looks to improve its defensive organization during a critical stage of the MLS season.
