Atlanta United’s resilience was tested once again Saturday night, but this time there would be no dramatic comeback.
Just days after rallying from two goals down against Charlotte FC, the Five Stripes found themselves in the same situation at halftime against the New England Revolution. However, playing their third match in eight days finally caught up with them as New England pulled away for a convincing 4-1 victory at Gillette Stadium.
Despite another energetic attacking display and several quality scoring opportunities, Atlanta couldn’t match the Revolution’s clinical finishing.
Fast Start Ends in Frustration
Atlanta United opened the match confidently, controlling possession and earning three consecutive corner kicks inside the opening six minutes. Alexey Miranchuk was heavily involved early, orchestrating attacks from midfield, while Miguel Almirón forced Matt Turner into his first save in the ninth minute.
Unfortunately for Atlanta, New England struck first.
Veteran playmaker Carles Gil reminded everyone why he’s one of MLS’s elite creators, curling a beautiful strike into the bottom corner in the 11th minute after slipping past his defender.
The goal came completely against the run of play.
Atlanta continued pressing for an equalizer, with Fafa Picault creating dangerous opportunities and Cooper Sanchez driving into attacking spaces. The Five Stripes looked dangerous but lacked the final touch.
New England made Atlanta pay again in the 36th minute when Dor Turgeman converted from close range following a recycled set-piece to double the Revolution’s advantage.
Miguel Almirón nearly pulled one back before halftime, striking the post before forcing another excellent save from Turner moments later.
Despite creating several promising attacks, Atlanta entered halftime trailing 2-0 for the second consecutive match.
Revolution Capitalize as Fatigue Sets In
Unlike Wednesday’s inspiring comeback against Charlotte FC, Atlanta couldn’t find the same second-half energy.
New England extended its lead in the 56th minute after capitalizing on a misplaced back pass. Alhassan Yusuf delivered a perfect cross for Peyton Miller to finish at the back post.
Just ten minutes later, Brooklyn Raines combined neatly through the middle before calmly finishing to make it 4-0 and effectively put the match out of reach.
Atlanta refused to quit.
In the 85th minute, Alexey Miranchuk combined beautifully with substitute Cayman Togashi before finding Miguel Almirón inside the penalty area. The Paraguayan smashed home Atlanta’s lone goal of the evening, providing one bright moment on an otherwise difficult night.
Luke Brennan nearly added another late goal, but his efforts couldn’t reduce the deficit further as the Revolution secured all three points.
Almirón Makes Atlanta United History
Although the result was disappointing, Miguel Almirón achieved another remarkable milestone.
His late strike made him the first player in Atlanta United history to reach the prestigious 30 goals and 30 assists club, adding yet another chapter to his legendary legacy with the Five Stripes.
Other notable performances included:
- Alexey Miranchuk registered a career-high six chances created, constantly pulling the strings in midfield.
- Cayman Togashi recorded his first assist of the season after helping set up Almirón’s historic goal.
What’s Next for Atlanta United?
After an exhausting stretch of three matches in eight days, Atlanta United finally returns to a normal weekly schedule.
The Five Stripes now shift their focus to another Eastern Conference challenge when they host the Philadelphia Union on Saturday, August 1. Supporters are also invited to join fellow 17s for the club’s Pub Pop-Up and Match Watch Party beginning at 4 p.m. at LikeMinds and CHIRINGA on the Atlanta BeltLine.
Atlanta will hope fresh legs and a full week of preparation can help transform encouraging attacking performances into much-needed victories.
