Atlanta United had to come back twice Saturday night.

The 5-Stripes did it both times.

Trailing New York City FC early and then again in the second half, Atlanta United responded with goals from Giuliano Galoppo and Jay Fortune to earn a 2-2 draw at Mercedes-Benz Stadium.

The result keeps Atlanta’s unbeaten run alive, but it also gave the 5-Stripes several important individual moments — from Galoppo’s first goal in Atlanta to Fortune reaching another Homegrown milestone and Atlanta United 2 players Daniel Chica and Cameron Dunbar making their MLS debuts.

Atlanta United Answers Quickly After Early Setback

Atlanta didn’t have to wait long to find itself in trouble.

NYCFC opened the scoring in the fifth minute after a series of passes across the box ended with the ball deflecting off Matt Edwards and into the Atlanta net.

The response came almost immediately.

In the 10th minute, Elías Báez delivered a corner toward Enea Mihaj, who flicked the ball toward the back post. Tomás Jacob kept the play alive by sending it back across goal, and Giuliano Galoppo was waiting in the right spot to finish.

It was Galoppo’s first goal for Atlanta United and his first home appearance with the club.

Just like that, the game was level.

From there, the match became the physical, end-to-end battle that both teams expected. Atlanta and NYCFC traded chances, but neither side could find the breakthrough before halftime.

The visitors ultimately held more possession after the break, but Atlanta continued to create opportunities of its own.

NYCFC Takes the Lead Again

Atlanta’s second-half challenge became more difficult in the 55th minute when Tomás Jacob left the match.

His replacement was another important storyline.

Daniel Chica, called up from Atlanta United 2 on a Short-Term Agreement, entered the match for his MLS debut.

One minute later, NYCFC found its second goal.

Another ball squared across the Atlanta penalty area eventually found Andrés Perea, who had enough space to fire past Lucas Hoyos and put New York City ahead 2-1.

Atlanta had to chase the match again.

And once again, the 5-Stripes found an answer.

Jay Fortune Delivers on a Milestone Night

The timing couldn’t have been better for Jay Fortune.

Fortune entered the match as a substitute and was already celebrating a significant personal milestone.

With his appearance, he moved level with former Atlanta United Homegrown Caleb Wiley for the most appearances in club history by a Homegrown player, reaching 85.

Then he added an even bigger moment.

In the 75th minute, Tristan Muyumba helped create the opportunity, settling a Luke Brennan cross and feeding Fortune.

Fortune took the chance.

His low strike beat NYCFC goalkeeper Tomás Romero and pulled Atlanta level at 2-2.

For a player who recently committed his future to Atlanta United through 2030, it was another memorable chapter in a rapidly growing club legacy.

The goal was also Fortune’s reward for returning to the lineup after dealing with injuries earlier this season.

More MLS Debuts From Atlanta United 2

Fortune’s goal wasn’t the only milestone Atlanta fans were watching.

Daniel Chica made his MLS debut in the 55th minute, while Cameron Dunbar entered in the 86th minute for his own first MLS appearance.

Their opportunities were a direct product of Atlanta’s difficult circumstances during the international window.

Five first-team players — Miguel Almirón, Alexey Miranchuk, Júnior Alonso, Paulo Díaz and Fafa Picault — were unavailable because of international duty.

That opened the door for Atlanta United 2.

Chica and Dunbar had already been key contributors to Atlanta United 2’s historic 2026 season, with the second team reaching the MLS NEXT Pro playoffs for the first time in club history. Dunbar also finished the regular season as the league’s Playmaker of the Year after leading MLS NEXT Pro with 13 assists.

Atlanta United’s Depth Faces Major Test as NYCFC Arrives During International Break

The results were tangible Saturday.

Atlanta’s depth wasn’t just tested.

It was put on display.

Atlanta Pushes for a Winner — But Can’t Find It

At 2-2, the match opened up again.

Both teams knew the three points could prove important as the playoff race tightened, and neither side appeared satisfied with settling for a draw.

Atlanta continued looking for the winner, but its final push was complicated by an injury to Chica in the 90th minute.

The defender took a heavy hit near the corner and was forced off, leaving Atlanta to finish the match down a player.

The 5-Stripes couldn’t find a late winner.

Neither could NYCFC.

The final whistle confirmed a 2-2 draw.

What This Means

Atlanta United leaves the match with one point, but the bigger takeaway may be what the performance revealed about the team’s depth.

The 5-Stripes were missing five regular first-team players and still managed to respond twice after falling behind.

Galoppo scored his first Atlanta goal.

Fortune delivered on a milestone night.

Chica and Dunbar made their MLS debuts.

Those aren’t small developments for a team trying to stay in the playoff picture.

At the same time, Atlanta’s defensive problems remain difficult to ignore. Both NYCFC goals came from situations where the visitors found space in the box after moving the ball across the face of goal.

The comeback was encouraging.

The defending still needs attention.

And with the playoff race tightening, Atlanta won’t have unlimited opportunities to leave points on the table.

ASN Take

Atlanta United didn’t win Saturday night, but this was another example of the 5-Stripes refusing to stay down.

That’s becoming an increasingly important characteristic of this team.

They conceded in the opening minutes and responded within six minutes.

They fell behind again in the second half and responded again.

And this time, the equalizer came from Fortune on a night that already carried plenty of personal significance.

The bigger storyline for ASN, though, is the development underneath the first team.

Atlanta went into this match shorthanded because of the international window. Instead of allowing those absences to completely reshape the team, Tata Martino turned to players who had earned their opportunity with Atlanta United 2.

Chica got his MLS debut.

Dunbar got his MLS debut.

And suddenly, Atlanta’s pipeline is becoming part of the first-team story.

That matters.

Atlanta United 2 has already reached its first MLS NEXT Pro playoffs. Now its players are beginning to make their mark at Mercedes-Benz Stadium.

For a club trying to build sustained depth, that’s exactly the kind of connection Atlanta needs between its second team and first team.

The 2-2 draw wasn’t perfect.

But there was plenty here for Atlanta to build on.

Milestones From the Match

Giuliano Galoppo: Scored his first Atlanta United goal in his first home appearance.

Jay Fortune: Made his 85th appearance for Atlanta United, tying Caleb Wiley for the club’s Homegrown appearance record, and scored the 75th-minute equalizer.

Daniel Chica: Made his MLS debut after entering in the 55th minute.

Cameron Dunbar: Made his MLS debut in the 86th minute.

Atlanta United: Remained unbeaten in the match despite trailing twice.

Up Next

Atlanta United now gets a weekend off because of the international break before returning to Mercedes-Benz Stadium for Latin Heritage Night against FC Cincinnati on Saturday, Oct. 10.

Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. ET.

The 5-Stripes will have another opportunity to push their playoff case — this time with more of their international players expected back in the fold.

The question now is whether Atlanta can turn these hard-earned points into three-point results down the stretch.
