Even with eight first-team players away on international duty, Atlanta United isn’t making things complicated. Head coach Ronny Deila and his staff are sticking to their principles: stay organized, be disciplined, and know where to go with the ball—regardless of who’s on the pitch.
“It’s simple demands from Ronny,” said midfielder Alexey Miranchuk. “First of all, just be 100% every time. Be together.”
Who Steps Up?
With key absences, Atlanta United must shuffle the lineup for Saturday’s clash against FC Cincinnati. Deila has options but has yet to confirm who will fill the gaps.

- Derrick Williams is the only first-team center back available.
- Ronald Hernández or Matt Edwards could slot in.
- A 3-at-the-back system could be an option to provide stability.
🔴 Midfield Adjustments:
- Bartosz Slisz, Jay Fortune, and Mateusz Klich are all unavailable.
- Will Reilly and Adyn Torres could step in as defensive midfielders.
Despite the changes, Deila remains confident in the team’s depth.
“It’s an opportunity now to get more players into the roster that can do a job,” Deila said.
Urgently Patient: Turning Performances Into Results
Deila acknowledged the fine balance between pushing players hard while keeping morale high.
“When you’ve been in football a long time, you understand that you cannot control results; you can control performances,” Deila explained.
The attacking chemistry is improving, but goals remain elusive. Atlanta United ranks sixth in expected goals (xG) per game yet has an xG differential of -0.63, indicating a lack of finishing.
“We’ve been working on this,” Miranchuk said. “We’re speaking all the time about where to go, where to receive the ball, how to receive it.”
A Pivotal Test Against Cincinnati
Facing a strong FC Cincinnati side away from home is no small challenge. However, with Cincinnati missing leading scorer Kévin Denkey, the opportunity is there for Atlanta United to turn their positive play into points.
“[If we] do a good result there, we light up the whole place,” Deila said.
With a reshuffled lineup but clear tactical identity, this match could serve as a statement game for Atlanta United.
