ATLANTA, GEORGIA—The Atlanta United FC has expressed sadness on the death of Christian Carrillo, a goalkeeper in Atlanta United’s academy on its U15 team.
Carillo was killed in a car accident by an alleged drunk driver on Saturday.
United FC president Darren Eales said Carillo is a huge loss since he is an exceptional player.
Eales said Carillo infused positivity and leadership into his team.
For leading the Atlanta United Academy to a remarkable performance this year in its debut in the United Premier Soccer League (UPSL) Georgia Georgia Division Championship, U-19 Coach José Silva gets the coveted 2021 UPSL Georgia Coach of the Year.
Under the leadership o Silva, the team placed second in the UPSL Georgia Division standings, finishing with 24 points and winning eight out of their 10 games to finish the regular season 8-0-2.
Despite being a young squad, the United Academy boasted the best defense in the Georgia Division, conceding just 10 goals. They scored 34 goals during the regular season, making them the second strongest offense.
Atlanta United Academy Director Matt Lawrey praised Silva for his win and credited his remarkable work ethic as the reason for the award.
“José has had an incredible impact on our U-19 age group, and our coaching staff since he’s joined the club,” Lawrey said.
“His work ethic and love for the game are contagious. We are so proud he has received this award and know he has fully deserved it,” Lawrey added.
Silva for his part is very happy and proud of his award.
“Thank you to the UPSL and also thank you to all of the players, because without them this recognition would not be possible,” Silva said.
“This is a recognition of all of the coaches that coached these guys,” Silva added.
Before coaching the team, Silva spent the previous three within the Orlando City Academy and USL teams.
