ATLANTA, GEORGIA—The Atlanta United FC has received up to $600,000 in General Allocation Money (GAM) from LAFC in exchange for defender Franco Escobar.
United FC will receive $250,000 GAM in 2022, up to $350,000 GAM in future incentives and a share of a future transfer should LAFC move Escobar outside of MLS.
“Franco was a true competitor during his time here and we’d like to thank him for his contributions to the club,” Atlanta United Vice President and Technical Director Carlos Bocanegra said.
“We wish him well at LAFC and in his future,” Bocanegra added.
Escobar joined United FC in 2018 from Newell’s Old Boys and quickly made an impact with 22 matches played, including 20 starts.
The versatile defender broke through during Atlanta’s 2018 MLS Cup run where he scored twice, including scoring in the MLS Cup Final against Portland.
In three seasons with the club, Escobar made 81 appearances across all competitions, including 71 in MLS. He spent 2021 on loan with Newell’s Old Boys and made six total appearances after suffering a fractured foot in February.
At the moment, United FC is gearing up for another solid performance in the MLS 2022 season.
For its opening salvo in the MLS 2022 season, the United FC will host the dangerous Sporting Kansas City on February 27, 2022, at 3 p.m. (ET) at Mercedes-Benz Stadium.
The match will be broadcast nationally and will be the first time Atlanta and Sporting KC face each other in a season opener.
It was also announced that Atlanta will face Colorado Rapids on Saturday, March 5 at 6 p.m. (ET) at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park in the reigning-Western Conference regular-season champions’ home opener. TV information for all matches will be announced at a later date, along with the remainder of the club’s MLS schedule.
The 2022 MLS season will feature 28 clubs, 14 in each conference, with clubs playing each team in its conference twice and eight teams from the other conference once for a total of 34 matches. After today’s announcement, Atlanta has six remaining matches against Western Conference opponents to be announced.
