ATLANTA, GEORGIA—After failing to get the services of noted European coach Paulo Fonseca, Atlanta United FC is now eyeing Seattle Sounders assistant coach Gonzalo Pineda as the team’s newest coach.
Sources said United FC has asked permission from Sounders management to allow them to talk to Pineda for the vacant head coaching position.
United FC is very interested to get Pineda since he is a vital part of the success of Sounders in Major League Soccer including their MLS soccer crown in 2019.
Fonseca, 48 earlier turned down the two-and-a-half-year contract offer to coach Atlanta United FC.
Fonseca, former Roma, and Shakhtar Donetsk manager is not too interested to get the job since he feels comfortable coaching in Europe.
United FC is in dire need of a new coach now to replace Argentine Gabriel Heinze.
The team is handled by the interim head coach of Rob Valentino.
Aiding Valentino in the team are Matt Lawry (Academy Director), Jack Kimber (First-team Fitness Coach), Ryan Alexander (Director of Sports Science), Liam Curran (Goalkeepers Coach), and 2s Head Coach Jack Collison who will assist in joint training activities between the two teams.
