ATLANTA, GEORGIA—One of our most beloved annual traditions makes its return this holiday season. Give a scarf, get a scarf is back at Atlanta United FC’s 8th annual Boxing Day Scarf Exchange.
On Dec. 26, bring a gently used scarf to one of our two pub partner locations and you’ll receive a brand-new 2021 Atlanta United Boxing Day scarf (while supplies last) as you watch the English Premier League on one of its biggest matchdays of the season.
This year, we’ll even have a curbside line at one of our pub locations (Hampton & Hudson) where fans can exchange their scarves while socially distancing. We’ll be donating all scarves exchanged this year to United Way of Greater Atlanta and donations will be accepted until noon.
What is Boxing Day?
Most celebrated at its origins in the United Kingdom, Boxing Day is a religious holiday recognized the day after Christmas (December 26). A day that started as a European tradition of donating money and “boxes” of clothing, materials, etc. to the less fortunate has now also become a celebration of soccer with marquee matches played throughout the day.
For comparison in the U.S., think of the tradition of watching American football on Thanksgiving with the whole family. Now, multiply the number of games and add in the soccer fanatic culture of the U.K., and you have Boxing Day.
So get ready, bring your scarves, watch Premier League matches and hang out with Atlanta United staff and supporters to celebrate the beautiful game.
At the moment, United FC is gearing up for another solid performance in the MLS 2022 season.
For its opening salvo in the MLS 2022 season, the United FC will host the dangerous Sporting Kansas City on February 27, 2022, at 3 p.m. (ET) at Mercedes-Benz Stadium.
The match will be broadcast nationally and will be the first time Atlanta and Sporting KC face each other in a season opener.
It was also announced that Atlanta will face Colorado Rapids on Saturday, March 5 at 6 p.m. (ET) at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park in the reigning-Western Conference regular-season champions’ home opener. TV information for all matches will be announced at a later date, along with the remainder of the club’s MLS schedule.
The 2022 MLS season will feature 28 clubs, 14 in each conference, with clubs playing each team in its conference twice and eight teams from the other conference once for a total of 34 matches. After today’s announcement, Atlanta has six remaining matches against Western Conference opponents to be announced.
