ATLANTA, GEORGIA—The dream of Brazilian striker Luiz Araújo to end the year with a Major League Soccer (MLS) award has ended in a nightmare.
Araujo only finished fourth in the MLS Newcomer of the Year Award.
The award was won this year by Los Angeles Football Club forward Cristian “Chicho” Arango.
The year 2021 is a solid year for Araujo as a member of United FC in the MLS.
He helped United FC achieve a playoff spot this year.
Also, Araujo has surpassed Venezuelan star striker and United FC’s current star player Josef Martinez as far as salary is concerned.
Araujo, who joined the team from Lille in France during the summer, has a guaranteed salary of $3,941,667 in the 2021 season.
Martinez for his part has a guaranteed salary of $3,891,667.
Araujo’s salary is the fourth-highest in MLS.
Martinez’s is fifth-highest.
The Brazilian striker who is playing a big role in the recent wins of United FC became part of the team last August 5.
Araújo played in 136 matches at Lille over four seasons and helped lead the club to the Ligue 1 title during the 2020-21 season. Araújo will be added to the team and occupy an international roster spot pending the receipt of his International Transfer Certificate (ITC) and P-1 Visa.
Araújo, 25, joined Lille in 2017 from São Paulo FC, where he began his career. Born in Taquaritinga, Brazil, Araújo broke through at the 2016 U-20 CONMEBOL Libertadores where he was the tournament’s leading scorer with five goals and helped lead São Paulo to the championship. Over two years, he made 49 career appearances with São Paulo and scored nine goals. He then made the move to France ahead of the 2017-18 season.
