ATLANTA, GEORGIA—After three years as one of the top defensive players of Atlanta United FC, Anton Walkes is set to leave the team and play for Charlotte FC in the 2022 Major League Soccer season.
According to reports,  Walkes was selected by Charlotte FC in the 2021 MLS Expansion Draft on Tuesday.
Walkes is one of the sought-after players in the expansion draft as he was selected as the number 2 pick.
Soccer experts consider the drafting of Walkes as a superb move for Charlotte since the latter is a reliable defender.
In 2021, Walkes started 32 out of 33 matches for Atlanta United, recording two goals and one assist on the season. He played the most minutes out of anyone on the team and established his leadership quality by being a team captain three times.
The 24-year-old from Lewisham, England spent three seasons in Atlanta. Atlanta United signed Walkes in 2020 from Portsmouth FC, an English professional team. He also played the 2017 season with Atlanta United on loan from Tottenham Hotspur, a club in the English Premier League.
Walkes is one of five players drafted by Charlotte FC ahead of its inaugural season in 2022. By rule, only one player can be picked from a club’s unprotected roster, which makes Walkes the only selection from Atlanta in the 2021 Draft.
In exchange for Walkes, Atlanta United will receive $50,000 in general allocation money.
At the moment, United FC is gearing up for another solid performance in the MLS 2022 season.
For its opening salvo in the MLS 2022 season, the United FC will host the dangerous Sporting Kansas City on February 27, 2022, at 3 p.m. (ET) at Mercedes-Benz Stadium.
The match will be broadcast nationally and will be the first time Atlanta and Sporting KC face each other in a season opener.
It was also announced that Atlanta will face Colorado Rapids on Saturday, March 5 at 6 p.m. (ET) at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park in the reigning-Western Conference regular-season champions’ home opener. TV information for all matches will be announced at a later date, along with the remainder of the club’s MLS schedule.
The 2022 MLS season will feature 28 clubs, 14 in each conference, with clubs playing each team in its conference twice and eight teams from the other conference once for a total of 34 matches. After today’s announcement, Atlanta has six remaining matches against Western Conference opponents to be announced.
