ATLANTA, GEORGIA—The successful pre-season scrimmage of Atlanta United FC against United Premier Soccer League team Georgia Storm FC last January 25 focuses on small things to make the team better.
United FC coach Gonzalo Pineda said the team is working on three main things this week at training that he wanted to see play out in the scrimmage.
First, press high and apply pressure. Then, on the defensive side, working on the back four and building that defensive lower block on the field. And finally, working on the field of play.
“Not very specific, but very generic concepts and principles have been the main thing, and I think it was decent,” Pineda said.
In the scrimmage, some of the young players of the team such as Tyler Wolff, Jackson Conway, and SuperDraft pick Erik Centeno also got to play.
Some of the veteran players of the team such as Brad Guzan also shared words of wisdom to the team.
United FC was missing several first-team members who are currently on international duty.
That includes defenders Brooks Lennon, Miles Robinson, and Caleb Wiley (United States), midfielder Ronald Hernández and striker Josef Martínez (Venezuela), and striker Machop Chol (South Sudan).
