Soccer is one of the biggest sports in the world, and it looks like it’s getting even bigger.
In September 2020, the Atlanta United Foundation and Local Initiatives Support Corporation (LISC) officially launched the GA 100 project. The campaign aims to create 100 mini-soccer fields across the state of Georgia before the 2026 World Cup. Atlanta has undoubtedly become a prominent city for soccer in America. With this program, the landscape of soccer in the U.S. is going to be even bigger.
The Atlanta United Foundation contributed 1.5 million dollars to lead the creation of 20 mini-fields around the state. The LISC is a national social enterprise that provides financing and support for community development around the country. With this contribution, they will collaborate with other local, non-profit, and community-based agencies to create mini soccer fields in schools, neighborhood parks, and other recreational sites.
GA 100’s focus is to make soccer more accessible to underserved communities across the state by providing low to moderate-income neighborhoods and communities the financial and technical assistance to improve the quality, safety, and accessibility of local mini-soccer fields.
In the first phase of the GA 100, grants totaling $292,500 were awarded to multiple foundations. The second phase will include grants for 16 mini-fields in underserved communities. Community organizations, schools, and other recreational departments that apply for these grants require a minimum community local match of one dollar for every AUF dollar- up to $75,000.
GA 100 is an enormous step for the growth of soccer throughout Georgia. Soccer brings people together and this program is further proof of how soccer can break social and financial boundaries.
As Rodrigo Rios, Atlanta United Academy Coach and Associate Committee Member of the Atlanta United Foundation, said: “The GA 100 project allows us to create soccer-specific spaces where entire communities, from young kids to adults, from different walks of life, can enjoy the benefits of playing soccer. We are really happy to be part of a project that will include more people across the state in the sport.”
