With the sun finally breaking through the winter chill, Atlanta United hit the training ground with renewed energy as they fine-tune their squad for the upcoming MLS season. After shaking off some offseason rust in last Saturday’s friendly against Chattanooga FC, the team returned to Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta Training Ground determined to build on what they learned.
New Faces Making an Impact
Atlanta United’s offseason saw some key additions, thanks to the work of new Chief Soccer Officer and Sporting Director Chris Henderson. One of the biggest acquisitions is Cayman Togashi, a striker with nearly a decade of professional experience in Japan. Born in New York, Togashi brings speed, finishing ability, and an eagerness to thrive in the passionate Atlanta atmosphere.
“When I watch the games, I felt the passion in the fans, and I want to experience that myself in the games,” Togashi said through a translator.
In the midfield, Mateusz Klich, acquired in a trade from D.C. United, is already impressing his teammates with his quick passing and sharp positioning. Midfielder Bartosz Slisz, now entering his second year with the club, is excited about the addition of a fellow Polish player but is even more eager to see Klich’s impact on the field.
“I’m happy with Klich here, and he’s a nice guy,” Slisz said. “I’m hopeful he’s going to help us on the pitch because that’s most important.”
Ronny Deila Building His System
New head coach Ronny Deila is in full evaluation mode, shaping the squad while also learning about his players. Training sessions have emphasized decision-making in tight spaces and fluid movement on and off the ball.
Slisz pointed out that while the players are adapting to Deila’s system, the coach is also adapting to them.
“He’s also learning us right now, seeing how we work, how we look, learning about the country, the league, everything,” Slisz said.
For Togashi, the transition has been smooth so far. He noted that Deila’s system is similar to what he played in Japan, and his focus is on balancing team play with expressing his unique strengths on the pitch.
“I think it’s important every session to show my personality and character,” he said. “Communication is important, demands from teammates and the coaching staff. That’s what I’m thinking every session I step on the field.”
Learning from Chattanooga, Eyes on Birmingham
Despite a 2-1 loss to Chattanooga FC, the focus remains on progress, not perfection. Atlanta led the match before conceding two late goals, a reminder that closing games will be crucial this season. Slisz acknowledged the learning opportunity but made it clear that the team has already moved forward.
“It’s good video to analyze, and of course, we have to keep working,” he said. “The next day is the most important, so I’ve already forgotten about [the Chattanooga] game, and we have to think forward.”
