ATLANTA, GEORGIA—The dream of Atlanta United to have a gallant stand in front of its fans did not materialize as the team got demolished inside the Mercedes-Benz Stadium 0-3 by the visiting Austin FC on July 9. The home team was very focussed on the game as all three designated players were in the starting lineup for head coach Gonzalo Pineda.
It was the second consecutive match and the first time at home that Josef Martínez, Luiz Araújo, and Thiago Almada made a start together. Despite the star-studded line-up, the home team failed to score as Austin FC successfully proved that they are indeed a great team on the road. Last July 3, the team barely avoided a three straight defeat on the road after they eked out a 2-2 draw against the home team and defending Major League Soccer champion New York City FC at the Yankee Stadium.
United FC veteran strikers Venezuelan Josef Martinez and Dom Dwyer provided the two goals for the team in the draw. The visiting United are very focused on the game as head coach Gonzalo Pineda inserted his top stars Josef Martínez, Luiz Araújo, and Thiago Almada into the starting lineup. The decision to allow the three stars to play together worked wonders as the team played well in the first half.
However, despite their brilliance, the home team could still score two goals, which resulted in the draw. After a lackluster performance on the road, United hopes to get back on its feet when they host the Orlando City SC for Heineken Rivalry Week on Sunday, July 17.
