Atlanta United fans bid farewell to a veteran presence this week as Quentin Westberg, the club’s backup goalkeeper, announced his retirement following the team’s Eastern Conference Semifinals exit in the Audi 2024 MLS Cup Playoffs. At 38, Westberg wraps up a career spanning nearly two decades, leaving behind a legacy of leadership, adaptability, and dedication.
A Journey Across Continents
Westberg’s professional journey began in 2006 at ES Troyes AC in Ligue 1, France’s top flight. Over the years, he honed his craft in France and Norway before venturing across the Atlantic to Major League Soccer.
In 2019, Westberg made his mark with Toronto FC, earning the starting goalkeeper role. Across four seasons, he played 68 matches, tallied 10 clean sheets, and maintained a save percentage of 60.7% or higher each season—a testament to his consistency and skill.
An Experienced Voice in Atlanta
Westberg joined Atlanta United in December 2022, bringing his wealth of experience to the Five Stripes. Over two seasons, he made six MLS starts, registering one clean sheet, while also serving as a mentor and steady presence alongside captain and starting goalkeeper Brad Guzan.
Although his time on the pitch was limited in Atlanta, Westberg’s impact extended far beyond matchdays. He brought a light-hearted yet competitive spirit, most memorably showcased when he and Guzan faced off in a club-produced “Family Feud” showdown, delighting fans on Atlanta United’s YouTube channel.
Westberg’s fluency in French also made him an invaluable teammate. After Jamal Thiaré’s game-winning two-goal performance against Inter Miami in the MLS Cup Playoffs, Westberg stepped in to translate during the post-match press conference, bridging the language gap and shining as a true team player.
A Fond Farewell
Westberg becomes the second Atlanta United player to retire this year, joining MLS stalwart Dax McCarty in calling time on his career. His retirement marks the end of a chapter, but his contributions to the game—and to Atlanta United—won’t be forgotten.
