The road to Portland is a long one.
Atlanta and Portland sit roughly 2,100 miles apart by air, making the Pacific Northwest trip one of the longest Atlanta United will face during the MLS regular season. But with the playoffs still within reach, the 5-Stripes aren’t treating the travel as an excuse.
They’re treating it as part of the job.
Atlanta United travels to face the Portland Timbers on Saturday night at 10:30 p.m. ET, with just nine regular-season matches remaining.
And for the first time this season, Atlanta enters a match with every player available for selection.
That could make this trip particularly important.
Atlanta United Finally Has a Fully Available Squad
Atlanta United’s Friday availability report listed no players unavailable for selection.
That is a notable development for a team that has dealt with injuries and roster availability issues throughout the season.
The challenges haven’t all come from the training room, either.
Following the Summer Transfer Window, Mauricio Amaro and Giuliano Galoppo both had to wait for work visas before becoming eligible to play.
Now, those processes are complete.
Galoppo, Atlanta’s final summer-window signing on loan from River Plate, has been waiting for his opportunity since arriving in Atlanta. The Argentine midfielder has described himself as a player who can connect the defensive midfield with the attack while also arriving in the box and contributing from distance.
That gives Tata Martino another midfield option as Atlanta tries to find more consistency during the final stretch of the season.
Galoppo Brings Another Dimension to the Midfield
Galoppo’s arrival was about more than adding another name to the roster.
He has specifically highlighted his ability to link midfield and attack, get into the penalty area and shoot from medium distance.
Those qualities could become especially useful for an Atlanta side looking to turn possession and chances into goals.
Galoppo also acknowledged the influence Martino had on his decision to join Atlanta.
The midfielder said Martino’s confidence in him played a major role in his choice to come to the club.
Now the opportunity is there for that relationship to move from conversations to the field.
For a team fighting to stay in the playoff picture, having another player capable of contributing between the lines could be important.
Alonso: Atlanta Doesn’t Have Time to Waste
The travel itself presents a challenge.
Atlanta left for the Pacific Northwest two days before the match to account for the distance and time change.
Júnior Alonso knows that kind of trip can affect preparation, but the veteran defender emphasized that adapting quickly is part of the responsibility that comes with playing professionally.
The bigger issue, however, is the calendar.
Atlanta has only nine matches remaining.
Every remaining opportunity to collect points matters more as the regular season winds down.
Alonso made that urgency clear when discussing the team’s playoff objective.
The 5-Stripes don’t have the luxury of taking several matches to find their rhythm.
They need to adapt quickly and start turning opportunities into results.
Community Spotlight: Staying Ready for What Comes Next
Atlanta United’s trip to Portland is a reminder that preparation matters when circumstances change. The 5-Stripes have to manage one of MLS’s longest road trips, adjust to the time difference and immediately shift their focus toward the final nine matches of the regular season. For Metro Atlanta families, staying prepared can be just as important when unexpected issues arise at home.

The 0-0 Draw Shows What Atlanta Can Create
Atlanta’s previous match, a 0-0 draw with D.C. United, offered a glimpse of what Martino wants his team to become.
The 5-Stripes controlled 60% of possession, produced 20 shots and generated 2.6 expected goals.
The problem was the most important statistic.
The ball never found the net.
Atlanta is hoping that the quality and volume of chances eventually translate into goals.
That conversion will be critical in Portland.
Possession alone won’t be enough with the season entering its final stretch. Atlanta needs the attacking control it showed against D.C. to become actual goals and points.
Portland Brings a Different Kind of Challenge
The Portland Timbers present a difficult matchup for a different reason.
According to Atlanta’s preview, Portland ranks among the Western Conference’s top three teams in goals scored while also sitting among the bottom three in goals conceded.
That combination suggests a team capable of turning matches into open, unpredictable affairs.
Portland has also recently lost its leading scorer, Kevin Kelsy, who departed for Rangers in Scotland earlier this month.
The Timbers still have dangerous attacking options, though.
Kristoffer Velde has scored three goals in his last three matches, giving Atlanta another attacking threat to account for.
But rather than becoming overly focused on Portland’s strengths, Atlanta’s coaching staff is emphasizing its own identity.
Martino Wants Atlanta to Play Its Own Game
Tata Martino’s message is straightforward: Atlanta needs to control what it can control.
The 5-Stripes are still developing their identity under Martino and his coaching staff, and the manager believes the team needs to take responsibility for how matches unfold.
That doesn’t mean ignoring the opponent.
It means making Atlanta’s own style the central focus.
For defender Enea Mihaj, that starts with attitude and reaction.
He pointed specifically to what Atlanta does after losing possession and, perhaps most importantly, how the team finishes its attacking actions.
That last part could determine how this road trip unfolds.
Atlanta has already demonstrated that it can create chances.
Now it needs to finish them.
What This Means for Atlanta United
This is where the calendar starts to matter as much as the opponent.
Atlanta has nine matches remaining and is still pursuing a playoff place.
The team now has a fully available squad, including players who had previously been unavailable because of injuries or visa issues.
It also has a recent performance against D.C. United that demonstrated the ability to dominate possession, generate shots and create quality chances.
The next step is converting that work into goals.
Portland won’t make that easy.
The Timbers have shown they can score, and their recent attacking form gives Atlanta another test on the road.
But with the postseason objective still alive, Atlanta’s focus is clear: adapt quickly, play its own style and finish the chances it creates.
Kickoff is scheduled for 10:30 p.m. ET Saturday night.
For Atlanta United, the playoff push is officially down to the final nine.
ASN Take
The most important development heading into Portland may not be a single player or tactical adjustment.
It’s availability.
For the first time this season, Atlanta United has a completely healthy roster available for selection. That gives Martino more options at a point when there isn’t much time left to experiment.
The D.C. United match showed the potential of Atlanta’s approach: 20 shots, 60% possession and 2.6 expected goals.
The next step is obvious from the numbers — finish.
Galoppo’s availability adds another midfield option, while the return of other players gives Atlanta more depth for the final stretch.
But the roster only matters if Atlanta can turn those options into results.
With nine matches remaining and a playoff push still possible, the margin for wasted opportunities is getting smaller.
