Atlanta United will be forced to adjust its lineup once again after the club confirmed injuries to two starters following Friday night’s 1-0 Southern Showdown loss to Nashville SC.
The Five Stripes announced Monday that Jay Fortune is expected to miss three-to-four weeks after suffering a left hamstring strain, while defender Matt Edwards has been listed as day-to-day with a hamstring injury of his own.
The timing couldn’t be much tougher as Atlanta prepares for a busy stretch of MLS action.
Fortune’s Injury Adds to Midfield Challenge
Fortune’s night at GEODIS Park was cut short after just 11 minutes, forcing Atlanta United into an early substitution that disrupted Tata Martino’s game plan.
The versatile Homegrown midfielder has become an important piece for Atlanta this season, providing energy, defensive stability and composure in midfield. Losing him for up to a month leaves another hole in a squad already searching for consistency during the second half of the MLS campaign.
With Fortune unavailable, Atlanta could turn to players such as Will Reilly, Tristan Muyumba, Cooper Sanchez, or other midfield options to fill the vacancy over the coming weeks.
Edwards Also Nursing Hamstring Issue
The injury news didn’t stop with Fortune.
Starting right back Matt Edwards also picked up a hamstring injury during Friday’s match. Fortunately for Atlanta, the club described his status as day-to-day, leaving open the possibility that he could return sooner than Fortune.
Edwards has been a dependable option across the back line this season, and his availability will be closely monitored ahead of Wednesday night’s road trip.
If Edwards is unavailable, Atlanta may once again lean on its defensive depth while awaiting the arrivals of recent signings Paulo Díaz and Júnior Alonso, who continue working through visa and registration procedures.

Atlanta United won’t have much time to regroup.
The Five Stripes return to action on Wednesday, July 22, when they travel to Bank of America Stadium for another important Eastern Conference matchup against Charlotte FC.
Atlanta enters the contest with a 3-10-2 (11 points) record and will be looking to bounce back after a narrow defeat in Nashville. Every point becomes increasingly valuable as the club attempts to climb back into the playoff conversation.
