Atlanta United’s recent momentum has been difficult to sustain, and the Five Stripes now face another crucial test as they continue a demanding stretch away from Mercedes-Benz Stadium.
After dropping points in Nashville, Charlotte and New England following the FIFA World Cup break, Atlanta United heads to Sports Illustrated Stadium to face the New York Red Bulls on Saturday, August 1, hoping to reverse a troubling run of form before finally returning home in mid-August.
The road has been unforgiving for Atlanta this season, but there are still encouraging signs beneath the results.
Road Results Haven’t Reflected Atlanta United’s Performances
Atlanta United enters the weekend with an 0-2-1 record over its current three-match road swing.
The disappointing stretch began with a narrow 1-0 defeat at Nashville SC, a match where the Five Stripes arguably controlled play for much of the evening but failed to capitalize on their opportunities.
Defender Enea Mihaj summed up the team’s frustration afterward, emphasizing that performances alone are no longer enough.
“We have to win games… what is missing is getting something out of the way we play.”
That frustration continued in Charlotte, where Atlanta showed tremendous resilience by overcoming a two-goal deficit to earn a dramatic 2-2 draw. It marked one of the club’s most spirited comebacks of the season and demonstrated the fight Tata Martino’s squad continues to show despite its difficult campaign.
Unfortunately, that momentum disappeared just days later.
Heavy Defeat in New England Extends Difficult Stretch
Atlanta United struggled to maintain its energy during its third match in eight days, falling 4-1 to the New England Revolution.
Despite creating several quality scoring opportunities early, New England punished Atlanta’s defensive mistakes and clinical finishing ultimately proved decisive.
Miguel Almirón provided one bright spot, scoring his second consecutive goal after also finding the net against Charlotte. His recent resurgence could become increasingly important as Atlanta searches for consistency in attack.
The Five Stripes were also missing several key contributors in Foxborough, including Jay Fortune and Tomás Jacob, forcing additional adjustments during an already demanding schedule.
Red Bulls Present Another Major Challenge
Atlanta now travels to face a New York Red Bulls side that has improved significantly since the clubs last met.
The Five Stripes defeated New York 3-1 at Mercedes-Benz Stadium back on March 14, but the Red Bulls have found far better form during the months since and will present another difficult road challenge.
For Atlanta United, earning points before finally returning home could help restore confidence heading into the final stretch of the MLS regular season.
While results have not followed recent performances, there remains optimism that improved finishing and the continued form of players like Miguel Almirón can help turn encouraging displays into victories.

Atlanta United has shown enough quality over the past several matches to suggest the team is moving in the right direction despite the standings.
The comeback against Charlotte highlighted the squad’s resilience, while Almirón’s return to scoring form provides another reason for optimism. However, defensive consistency and converting chances into goals remain critical if the Five Stripes hope to climb the Eastern Conference table.
