Atlanta United finally gave the 17s something to celebrate at Mercedes-Benz Stadium. Now the 5-Stripes have to prove Saturday’s comeback win over Red Bull New York was the start of something bigger.
Atlanta heads back on the road Wednesday night to face Minnesota United in an 8:30 p.m. ET kickoff, beginning another demanding stretch of three matches in eight days. After ending its long home drought with a 2-1 victory over New York, Atlanta will try to carry that confidence into a Minnesota matchup that presents a very different challenge.
The message from inside the locker room is simple: don’t let the momentum stop at Mercedes-Benz Stadium.
“We’re not satisfied with those three points,” Cooper Sanchez said Tuesday. “We want to keep going and keep building momentum.”
Atlanta United Wants More After Red Bulls Comeback
The 5-Stripes showed plenty of resilience Saturday after falling behind early against Red Bull New York.
Tristan Muyumba’s equalizer and Fafa Picault’s late goal turned the match around, giving Atlanta its first home victory after a lengthy absence from Mercedes-Benz Stadium.
Now comes the difficult part: doing it again.
Wednesday marks Atlanta’s fifth away match in its last six fixtures, putting even more importance on the team’s ability to maintain its energy while traveling.
Head coach Tata Martino emphasized the importance of sticking with the team’s identity rather than allowing the circumstances of a match to dictate how Atlanta plays.
The 5-Stripes will have to do that without a few players, however.
Jay Fortune remains sidelined with a hamstring injury, while Will Reilly is questionable with an ankle issue. Mauricio Amaro remains unavailable as he works through the visa process.
Atlanta does get Enea Mihaj back after serving his red-card suspension, while Paulo Díaz will travel with the team after missing Saturday’s match for fitness reasons.

A Different Kind of Minnesota Test
Atlanta’s history with Minnesota United goes back to the early days of both clubs, including a pair of notoriously cold encounters during Martino’s first stint with the 5-Stripes.
Martino joked Tuesday that his second trip to Minnesota was colder than his first.
This time, the conditions should be much more comfortable.
Minnesota is celebrating its 10th year as a club, adding another layer to Wednesday’s matchup. The Loons will also be looking to protect home-field advantage against an Atlanta side attempting to find consistency on the road.
The matchup could be more tactical than some of the previous meetings between the clubs.
Minnesota has scored just 21 goals this season, the same total as Atlanta, and has failed to score more than once in an MLS match in eight straight attempts.
The Loons still have dangerous attacking pieces, though. Kelvin Yeboah remains their leading scorer, while Joaquín Pereyra has found the net three times across his last two matches in all competitions.
Atlanta’s biggest advantage could once again come from the midfield.
Adrian Gill, Tristan Muyumba and Cooper Sanchez Give Atlanta a New Midfield Look
One of the biggest positives from Saturday’s victory was Atlanta’s performance in the middle of the field.
Adrian Gill made his MLS debut after spending much of the season with Atlanta United 2, while Muyumba delivered a Man of the Match-caliber performance and Sanchez provided another energetic performance.
Despite conceding the majority of possession against New York, Atlanta found ways to win key moments of the match.
For Sanchez, that chemistry comes from the work the midfielders put in together every day.
“It’s just the understanding of each other,” Sanchez said. “We’re always together in training, and we’re all technically competent, so we know how to play with each other.”
That understanding will be tested again against Minnesota.
The Loons have attacking players capable of exploiting mistakes, meaning Atlanta’s midfield will need to remain disciplined while still providing the creativity needed to generate chances.
What This Means for Atlanta United
Saturday’s win was important, but Wednesday could tell us even more about where this Atlanta United team is heading.
The 5-Stripes have spent much of the season searching for consistency. A strong home performance followed by a positive result on the road would give Martino’s squad something it has lacked for stretches of 2026: momentum.
The formula doesn’t necessarily have to be pretty.
Atlanta needs to defend better, take advantage of its opportunities and remain committed to the identity Martino wants the team to establish.
With both teams sitting on 21 goals this season, Wednesday could come down to a handful of decisive moments rather than an attacking shootout.
And after finally getting three points at home, Atlanta won’t be looking for excuses on the road.
It’ll be looking for another win.
