How Were These Opponents Selected?
The Leagues Cup assigns 18 MLS teams and 18 Liga MX teams into two regions: Eastern and Western. Within each region, clubs are grouped based on tiers, determined by last season’s point totals. Atlanta United will play one club from each tier:
- Tier 1: Pumas – Finished with 58 points last season.
- Tier 2: Necaxa – Collected 42 points, just two more than Atlanta United.
- Tier 3: Atlas – Earned 36 points across both Apertura and Clausura phases.
Leagues Cup Format: No Draws, High Stakes
Each team will play three group matches in Phase One, with a unique No Draws format:
- If the match is tied after 90 minutes, it goes straight to penalties.
- Points System:
- Win in regulation: 3 points
- Win via penalties: 2 points
- Loss via penalties: 1 point
- Regulation loss: 0 points
After the group stage, the four MLS and four Liga MX teams with the highest point totals will move on to the quarterfinals. Teams will be seeded 1-4 within their leagues and matched up accordingly, ensuring MLS vs. Liga MX matchups continue through the knockout rounds.
