ATLANTA, GEORGIA—The title retention bid of Atlanta United in the 2022 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup will be put to the test on May 11 at eight in the evening. After a rousing start in the third-round match-up with a 6-0 win over the visiting Chattanooga FC, 6-0 at Fifth Third Bank Stadium in Kennesaw, Ga, last April 20, the team will face the tough team Nashville SC on May 11.
The Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup, referred to as the Open Cup is a single-elimination competition that features teams from various American soccer leagues, including MLS and USL. The Open Cup is the oldest ongoing national soccer competition in the U.S. and the third-longest-running open soccer tournament globally.
This year, the competition returns after a two-year hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Atlanta United is the current champion and won the title in 2019. Since it’s been a while since the previous U.S. Open Cup, here’s a brief refresher about the tournament.
The winner of the Open Cup will win prize money and earn an automatic spot in the 2023 Concacaf Champions League.
The Fifth Third Bank Stadium is a lucky venue for United since it is the same stadium the team won the U.S. Open Cup in 2019, they won twice there against Charleston Battery and St. Louis FC. Five of the six goals were scored by a different player, and every player but two on tonight’s match roster appeared.
Two of the goals were provided by striker Dom Dwyer. “Everyone makes an impact, everyone makes a difference,” Dwyer said.
“We have a strong group, and we’re here for the long run here. We want trophies, so this is the first step,” Dwyer added.
Aside from Dwyer, also scoring goals for the team in their win are fullback Ronald Hernandez, midfielder Marcelino Moreno, forward Luiz Araujo, and Brooks Lennon.
