Atlanta United showed the fighting spirit fans have been waiting to see, rallying from two goals down to earn a hard-fought 2-2 draw against Charlotte FC on Wednesday night at Bank of America Stadium.
After trailing 2-0 at halftime in another heated rivalry matchup, the Five Stripes responded with an inspired second-half performance highlighted by breakthrough goals from Elías Báez and captain Miguel Almirón. While it wasn’t three points, the comeback demonstrated the progress Tata Martino’s side is beginning to make.
Charlotte Strikes Early Despite Atlanta Chances
The match opened at a frantic pace, with Charlotte creating danger almost immediately. Goalkeeper Lucas Hoyos was called into action within two minutes before Kerwin Vargas narrowly missed the target moments later.
Atlanta gradually settled into possession, with Cooper Sanchez and Alexey Miranchuk combining well through midfield. However, Charlotte capitalized on a counterattack in the 16th minute. Hoyos initially denied the breakaway, but Vargas reacted quickest to score the rebound.
Atlanta nearly answered before halftime when Miguel Almirón raced through on goal, only to be denied by Charlotte goalkeeper Kristijan Kahlina. Instead, Charlotte doubled its advantage just before the break as Liel Abada finished off a cross from Pep Biel, sending the hosts into halftime with a commanding 2-0 lead.
Báez Ignites the Comeback
Rather than making substitutions at halftime, Tata Martino trusted his starting eleven to respond.
The decision paid off.
In the 57th minute, left back Elías Báez surged forward and met a perfectly delivered cross from Tomás Jacob, powering a header beyond Kahlina for his first Atlanta United goal.
The goal breathed life into Atlanta’s attack, and the visitors continued to press despite Charlotte introducing fresh legs.
Their persistence was rewarded in the 76th minute.
Báez once again played a crucial role, delivering another dangerous ball into the box. Jacob headed it across goal, where Miguel Almirón calmly finished to level the match at 2-2, scoring his first MLS goal of the season.
It marked Atlanta United’s first-ever comeback result against Charlotte FC.
Hoyos Keeps Atlanta Alive
Although Atlanta celebrated the comeback, goalkeeper Lucas Hoyos played an equally important role.
The Argentine produced eight saves throughout the night, repeatedly denying Charlotte in one-on-one situations and preventing the match from slipping completely away before Atlanta’s rally.
His performance gave the Five Stripes every opportunity to climb back into the contest.
Milestones Worth Celebrating
Several significant milestones came from Wednesday night’s result:
