Atlanta United has added another young international talent to its midfield, signing Mauricio Amaro from Uruguayan side Defensor Sporting Club through the 2028-29 season, with an option for 2029-30.
The 21-year-old Montevideo native will occupy a U-22 Initiative roster spot and an international roster slot pending receipt of his International Transfer Certificate and P-1 Visa.
For Atlanta, the move represents another investment in a young player with the ability to win the ball, compete defensively and push the team forward in possession.

Who Is Mauricio Amaro?
Amaro came through the youth system at Defensor Sporting Club before breaking into the first team as a teenager.
He made his Uruguayan Primera División debut at just 17 years old against Wanderers on June 18, 2023.
Since then, Amaro has accumulated 64 appearances across all competitions, playing more than 4,300 minutes and recording two assists.
His role grew significantly over the past two seasons.
In 2025, Amaro started 21 of his 31 league appearances. He then became an even more important piece in 2026, starting all 20 of his league appearances and recording one assist.
His time in Uruguay also includes silverware. Amaro helped Defensor Sporting win the 2024 Uruguayan Cup, starting three matches and contributing one assist during the competition.
At the international level, Amaro has represented Uruguay’s U-20 national team, making five appearances since his debut in 2024.
What Amaro Brings to Atlanta United
Atlanta United Chief Soccer Officer and Sporting Director Chris Henderson highlighted several qualities the club believes can strengthen its midfield.
“He’s a player who will strengthen our midfield with his tackling, ball winning, competitiveness and ability to drive forward and split lines in possession.”
That profile could give Atlanta another option in the middle of the field as the Five Stripes continue building their roster for the second half of the 2026 season.
Amaro’s combination of defensive work and forward progression is particularly notable. Atlanta isn’t simply adding another midfielder; the club is bringing in a player who has already established himself as a regular starter at the professional level despite his young age.
His U-22 Initiative designation also fits Atlanta’s continued effort to develop younger talent while adding players capable of contributing at the senior level.

Atlanta United’s Midfield Gets Another Addition
With Amaro’s arrival, Atlanta United’s midfield group grows to 11 players.
The current midfield roster includes:

- Steven Alzate
- Mauricio Amaro
- Jay Fortune
- Adrian Gill
- Alexey Miranchuk
- Tristan Muyumba
- Santiago Pita
- Will Reilly
- Cooper Sanchez
- Adyn Torres
The move comes after Atlanta recently made changes elsewhere on the roster.
Forward Latte Lath was loaned to Union Berlin for the 2026-27 season, with the German Bundesliga club taking on his full salary and a permanent transfer option included in the deal. That move opened a Designated Player spot for Atlanta.
Meanwhile, defender Pedro Amador was transferred to Hapoel Be’er Sheva of Israel’s top division.
