Atlanta United has made a major addition to its attack, bringing one of Switzerland’s most experienced international players to the 5-Stripes.
The club announced Sunday that it has signed forward Breel Embolo from Stade Rennais to a contract through the 2029-30 season. The 29-year-old will occupy a Designated Player and international roster spot, pending the receipt of his International Transfer Certificate and P-1 Visa.
For an Atlanta United team looking to build momentum during the second half of the 2026 season, Embolo arrives with a résumé that immediately stands out. The Swiss international has played nearly 400 professional matches across some of Europe’s top leagues, competed in the UEFA Champions League and represented Switzerland at three FIFA World Cups.
Atlanta United Chief Soccer Officer and Sporting Director Chris Henderson said Embolo’s combination of experience, goal-scoring ability and work rate made him an important addition to the club.
A Proven Goal Scorer Arrives in Atlanta
Embolo joins Atlanta United with 380 professional appearances, 100 goals and 66 assists across top-flight soccer in Switzerland, Germany and France.
His experience includes spells with FC Basel, Schalke 04, Borussia Mönchengladbach, AS Monaco and Stade Rennais, giving him a background few MLS newcomers can match. He has also appeared 30 times in the UEFA Champions League and 27 times in the UEFA Europa League, recording four goals and four assists in each competition.
The signing gives Atlanta another experienced option at center forward and adds a different profile to an attacking group that includes Fafa Picault, Luke Brennan, Cayman Togashi and Sergio Santos.
Embolo’s ability to score, combine with teammates and work relentlessly off the ball could make him an intriguing fit alongside Atlanta’s creative players. With Miguel Almirón and Alexey Miranchuk providing attacking quality from deeper positions, the 5-Stripes now have another proven target capable of connecting play and finishing chances inside the box.

From Basel to Europe’s Biggest Stages
Embolo’s professional journey began in Switzerland after developing with FC Nordstern BS and BSC Old Boys before joining the FC Basel Academy in 2010.
He made his First Team debut at just 17 years old in a UEFA Europa League Round of 16 match against Salzburg in March 2014. From there, Embolo quickly became one of the most exciting young players in Swiss soccer.
Over three seasons with Basel, he recorded 31 goals and 21 assists in 90 appearances across all competitions while helping the club win three consecutive Swiss league titles. His breakout campaign earned him the Swiss Super League Player of the Year award in 2015.
His performances eventually led to a move to Germany’s Bundesliga, where he continued his development with Schalke before joining Borussia Mönchengladbach.
At Mönchengladbach, Embolo recorded 25 goals and 20 assists in 106 appearances, helping the club qualify for the Champions League and establishing himself as a consistent contributor in one of Europe’s most demanding leagues.
Monaco Success and a Strong Final Season in France
Embolo moved to AS Monaco in 2022 and made an immediate impact, scoring 12 goals in his first Ligue 1 season.
Although an injury limited his following campaign, Embolo returned to contribute as Monaco continued competing near the top of the French league. During the 2024-25 season, he added six league goals and five assists while helping Monaco finish third in Ligue 1.
He also contributed on the Champions League stage, recording additional goal contributions as Monaco advanced beyond the group stage.
Before arriving in Atlanta, Embolo spent the 2025 season with Stade Rennais, where he scored 10 goals and added three assists in 34 appearances across all competitions.

Since making his international debut in 2015, Embolo has recorded 26 goals and 20 assists in 92 appearances for Switzerland. He has appeared in three FIFA World Cups, scoring four goals and adding three assists across 14 matches.
Most recently, Embolo helped Switzerland reach the quarterfinals of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, starting all six matches and contributing two goals and two assists.
That kind of experience could prove invaluable for an Atlanta squad featuring several players who have competed at the highest international level.
