Atlanta United returns to MLS action Wednesday night looking to bounce back from its narrow loss to Nashville SC, and all eyes will be on one of the club’s newest additions.
Júnior Alonso makes his highly anticipated Atlanta United debut as the 5-Stripes take on regional rival Charlotte FC at Bank of America Stadium. Kickoff is scheduled for 8 p.m. ET as Atlanta looks to build on an encouraging performance despite last week’s 1-0 defeat.
Head coach Tata Martino hinted Tuesday that Alexey Miranchuk’s role would depend on the opponent, emphasizing the Russian playmaker’s tactical flexibility.
“[Different] games call for different ways to approach it,” Martino said.
With Charlotte presenting a different challenge, Atlanta’s attacking setup promises to be fluid throughout the evening.
Alonso Headlines Atlanta United Lineup
The biggest storyline is the first appearance for Paraguayan international Júnior Alonso, who joins the starting lineup after completing his move to Atlanta United.
Fresh off representing Paraguay at the 2026 FIFA World Cup alongside captain Miguel Almirón, Alonso partners Enea Mihaj in central defense. The experienced center back is expected to bring leadership and stability to a back line that has undergone significant changes in recent weeks.
Lucas Hoyos starts in goal behind the defensive unit, while Tomás Jacob and Elías Báez occupy the fullback positions.

Sanchez is expected to remain with Atlanta United through the weekend before joining the United States U-19 Men’s National Team for the 2026 Concacaf U-20 Championship.
Miranchuk, Almirón Lead Flexible Attack
Atlanta’s front three offers plenty of tactical versatility.
Miranchuk, the club’s leading creator this season, starts alongside Miguel Almirón and veteran winger Fafa Picault. All three players have experience playing multiple attacking positions, giving Martino the flexibility to alter the shape during the match.
Almirón returns as captain after representing Paraguay at the World Cup and enters the contest in strong creative form. Against Nashville, he became just the second player in club history—behind Thiago Almada—to record 15 MLS matches with at least three shots and three chances created.
Miranchuk also has fond memories against Charlotte. The designated player scored in Atlanta United’s 2-0 U.S. Open Cup Round of 16 victory over Charlotte FC earlier this season, while Cooper Sanchez added his first senior goal for the club.
Young Talent Continues to Shine
Atlanta United’s bench once again features several exciting ATL UTD 2 standouts.
Arif Kovac, Toto Majub, and Ignacio Suarez-Couri are all available after signing Short-Term Agreements ahead of this week’s matches. Their inclusion continues the club’s commitment to rewarding academy and MLS NEXT Pro performances with First Team opportunities.
