Atlanta United heads into Saturday night with little room for error in the Eastern Conference playoff race.

The Atlanta United starting XI features the return of Homegrown midfielder Cooper Sanchez as the 5-Stripes visit D.C. United at 7:30 p.m. ET in a matchup that could have a direct impact on Atlanta’s postseason hopes.

Sanchez missed Atlanta’s midweek match while in concussion protocol, but the 18-year-old is back in the lineup and joins Jay Fortune and Mauricio Amaro in midfield.

With Atlanta needing points, the trio offers a combination of energy, pressing and defensive work that could help the Five Stripes win possession higher up the field and create more opportunities in transition.

Atlanta United Starting XI vs. D.C. United

Lucas Hoyos starts in goal, while the back line features one change from the previous lineup.

Starting XI:

  • Lucas Hoyos
  • Tomás Jacob
  • Júnior Alonso
  • Enea Mihaj
  • Elías Báez
  • Jay Fortune
  • Mauricio Amaro
  • Cooper Sanchez
  • Alexey Miranchuk
  • Miguel Almirón (C)
  • Breel Embolo

Reserves: Jayden Hibbert, Matt Edwards, Paulo Díaz, Adrian Gill, Will Reilly, Sergio Santos, Fafa Picault, Luke Brennan, Tristan Muyumba

Enea Mihaj is the new addition to the defensive group, joining Tomás Jacob, Júnior Alonso and Elías Báez in front of Hoyos.

The assignment is straightforward: keep D.C. United off the scoresheet while Atlanta looks to turn its attacking possession into goals.

D.C. entered the match with the second-lowest goals total in the Eastern Conference, giving Atlanta another opportunity to control the game defensively and force the hosts to chase the match.

Cooper Sanchez Returns to the Midfield

Sanchez’s return is one of the biggest storylines in the lineup.

The 18-year-old has already become an important part of Atlanta’s midfield despite his age, and his ability to pressure opponents gives Tata Martino another tool in the center of the pitch.

Against D.C., Sanchez will operate alongside Fortune and Amaro.

That midfield combination has the potential to make Atlanta more aggressive without the ball. If the three can disrupt D.C.’s buildup and recover possession in advanced areas, the Five Stripes could give their attacking players more chances to operate closer to goal.

Sanchez has now started 21 matches for Atlanta United. That’s the second-most starts by an Atlanta Homegrown player before turning 19.

His return comes at an important moment.

Atlanta’s Designated Players Need to Deliver

Atlanta’s attacking group has plenty of experience and quality, but the biggest question remains whether that quality can become goals.

Breel Embolo, Miguel Almirón and Alexey Miranchuk lead the attack against D.C. United.

All three are capable of creating opportunities, but Atlanta needs more end product from its Designated Players in a match where dropping points could make the playoff chase even more difficult.

Almirón enters the match on a notable creative streak. He has created multiple chances in 10 consecutive matches, the longest such streak of his career.

That run also ties Thiago Almada for the longest streak of consecutive matches with multiple chances created by an Atlanta United player since 2020.

The next step is turning that creativity into goals and points.

Miranchuk Continues to Lead Atlanta’s Scoring

Miranchuk has already surpassed 2,000 minutes played this season and remains Atlanta United’s leading scorer in MLS entering Saturday night.

His ability to find space between the lines and threaten from distance gives Atlanta another potential source of offense, particularly if D.C. sits deeper.

But Atlanta can’t rely on individual moments alone.

The midfield needs to move the ball quickly, the forwards need to occupy dangerous areas and the Five Stripes need to create enough sustained pressure to make their possession matter.

What the D.C. United Match Means for the Playoff Race

The stakes are clear.

Atlanta United enters Saturday trying to make up ground on D.C. United in the Eastern Conference. The Five Stripes have already played D.C. to a 0-0 draw this season, meaning another stalemate would do little to help Atlanta’s pursuit of the postseason.

A victory, however, would bring Atlanta within three points of D.C. United.

That’s the opportunity in front of the Five Stripes.

At this stage of the season, Atlanta doesn’t necessarily need a perfect performance. It needs points — and preferably three of them.

Roster Notes to Watch

Miguel Almirón: The captain enters the match having created multiple chances in 10 straight games, tying Almada’s Atlanta-era record for consecutive matches with multiple chances created since 2020.

Alexey Miranchuk: The Designated Player has passed 2,000 minutes this season and remains Atlanta’s leading MLS scorer.

Cooper Sanchez: The Homegrown midfielder returns after missing the midweek match while in concussion protocol. His 21 starts are already the second-most by an Atlanta Homegrown player before turning 19.

Enea Mihaj: Mihaj gets the starting nod as Atlanta makes one change along the defensive line.

Atlanta vs. D.C.: The Five Stripes own a 10-7-4 record against D.C. United all-time. With a win Saturday, Atlanta could pull within three points of its Eastern Conference opponent.

ASN TAKE

This is the type of match where Atlanta United’s lineup tells the story.

Sanchez’s return gives Martino a young, energetic midfield alongside Fortune and Amaro, while the attacking trio of Embolo, Almirón and Miranchuk provides plenty of experience and creativity.

The problem is that Atlanta needs that creativity to become production.

Against a D.C. United side that entered the night near the bottom of the Eastern Conference in goals scored, the Five Stripes have an opportunity to control the match and put pressure on a team they’re chasing in the standings.

For Atlanta, this isn’t just another road game.

It’s a chance to make the playoff race a little more interesting.
