Atlanta United vs Charlotte FC already has plenty of rivalry energy, but Saturday’s meeting at Mercedes-Benz Stadium comes with something extra: playoff pressure.
The 5-Stripes enter the latest chapter of the I-85 rivalry riding a three-match winning streak and sitting just three points outside the Eastern Conference playoff line.
There is also some unfinished business at home.
Atlanta United has not defeated Charlotte FC at Mercedes-Benz Stadium since 2022, giving the 17s another reason to make Saturday night’s matchup a memorable one.
The teams meet at 7:30 p.m. ET Saturday, Aug. 29, with Atlanta looking to turn its recent momentum into another three points.
And at the center of one of the biggest tactical storylines is new center back Paulo Díaz.
Paulo Díaz Could Change Atlanta United’s Possession Game
Atlanta United’s busy Summer Transfer Window has reshaped the roster, with four players arriving and six departing on permanent or loan deals.
Díaz is now beginning to settle into his role.
The Chilean center back made his first appearances for the 5-Stripes last week, coming off the bench against Minnesota United before starting against Sporting Kansas City.
His timing could prove important.
Atlanta United announced the departure of Stian Gregersen on Thursday, making Díaz’s ability to contribute at the back even more significant as the club pushes toward the postseason.
Against Sporting Kansas City, Díaz showed exactly why Atlanta brought him in.
He played 73 minutes, recorded eight interceptions and completed nearly 94% of his passes.
Those numbers tell part of the story. His ability to anticipate plays and start attacks from the back may be just as important.
Head coach Tata Martino highlighted that quality Thursday.
“He brings quality experience, and he’s someone who’s able to see the first pass really well and anticipate, which is something that’s sometimes hard to find in center backs.”
For Atlanta, that first pass could matter quite a bit against Charlotte.
Atlanta United Wants More of the Ball
The 5-Stripes have won three straight matches, but their possession numbers have started to decline over the last couple of games.
There is a reasonable explanation for that.
Atlanta has spent much of its last 270 minutes protecting leads, meaning the game state has naturally pushed the team into a more defensive posture.
Still, Díaz’s comments suggest Atlanta does not want that to become its identity.
The new center back said the team is working toward controlling more of the match with the ball.
“I think this league has a lot of quick transitions, so there’s not as much possession from teams in the midfield. That’s something that we as a team are working on. We want to be able to have more of the ball.”
That could make Saturday’s matchup particularly interesting.
Charlotte has shown that it can punish teams when they commit numbers forward and lose possession. Martino specifically pointed to the danger Charlotte creates in transition.
For Atlanta, the challenge is not simply to possess the ball for possession’s sake. The 5-Stripes need to control the ball without exposing themselves to the transition opportunities that make Charlotte dangerous.
That puts Díaz’s composure and passing ability under the spotlight.
Charlotte FC Brings Plenty of Attacking Threats
Martino’s praise for Charlotte’s roster was accompanied by a clear warning.
The Crown have players capable of turning a transition into a dangerous attack quickly, particularly when Atlanta loses the ball while committing numbers forward.
One of the biggest players to watch is Pep Biel.
Biel can influence the match either as a goalscorer or creator, and he was named to MLS’ Team of the Matchday 22 after producing three goal contributions against D.C. United.
He has recorded 11 goals and eight assists in MLS play this season.
His positioning could make him especially difficult to track.
Martino noted that Biel has played as a third midfielder as well as in a freer role behind the forward, meaning Atlanta will need to identify where he is operating throughout the match rather than simply assigning responsibility to one area.
“We’re going to have to be very careful based on where he plays during the match.”
That tactical battle could go a long way toward determining how much control Atlanta can establish.
Miguel Almirón and Alexey Miranchuk Have Already Hurt Charlotte
Atlanta will have its own attacking weapons.
Although new Designated Player forward Breel Embolo will not be available for selection, the 5-Stripes have already shown they can find ways through Charlotte.
Miguel Almirón scored the equalizer in the teams’ July 22 meeting, while Alexey Miranchuk scored from distance in Atlanta’s U.S. Open Cup victory over Charlotte on April 28.
Together, Almirón and Miranchuk have produced 21 goal contributions in MLS play this season.
That production will be important against a Charlotte side that can create problems in transition.
Atlanta does not necessarily need to dominate every phase of the match. But the 5-Stripes will need their attacking players to capitalize when opportunities arrive while maintaining enough structure behind the ball to prevent Charlotte from turning mistakes into chances.
The Biggest Question: Can Atlanta Break the Home Drought?
This is where the rivalry becomes more than another regular-season match.
Atlanta has already faced Charlotte twice this season, including the MLS meeting in July and the U.S. Open Cup matchup in April.
The 5-Stripes have had success against their I-85 rivals this year.
But they have not beaten Charlotte at home since 2022.
That streak gives Saturday’s match an additional layer, particularly with Atlanta now fighting its way toward the playoff picture.
A fourth consecutive victory would not only extend the club’s current run. It would also give Atlanta another valuable three points at a crucial point in the season and finally put the home version of this rivalry back in the 5-Stripes’ favor.

Atlanta United has earned the right to feel confident heading into this matchup.
Three consecutive victories have changed the conversation around the team, and being only three points from the playoff line gives every remaining result additional weight.
But Charlotte presents a very specific test.
Atlanta needs to find the balance between playing proactively and protecting itself against Charlotte’s transition game. Díaz could be an important part of that equation, particularly if his ability to read the game and play the first pass helps Atlanta regain some of the possession it has sacrificed while managing recent leads.
The bigger picture is straightforward: Atlanta cannot afford to waste opportunities this close to the playoff line.
Díaz summed up the mentality the team needs.
“We should be playing all these games like it’s a final. We have to play with our lives, and we have to treat every game that way so we can get as many points as possible.”
Saturday night is another test of that mentality.

Atlanta United will look to extend its winning streak to four matches while trying to close the gap on the Eastern Conference playoff line.
The immediate challenges are clear: contain Biel and Charlotte’s transition attack, make the most of Almirón and Miranchuk’s attacking quality, and see whether Díaz can help the 5-Stripes establish more control from the back.
And then there is the rivalry itself.
Atlanta has already gotten results against Charlotte this season. Now the 5-Stripes have a chance to do something they have not done since 2022: beat Charlotte at home.
