Atlanta United’s youth pipeline continues to shine on the international stage.
Homegrown midfielder Cooper Sanchez has been named to the United States Under-19 Men’s National Team by head coach Gonzalo Segares for the 2026 Concacaf U-20 Championship, U.S. Soccer announced this week. The tournament runs from July 24 through August 9 in Mexico and serves as the qualifying competition for the 2027 FIFA U-20 World Cup, the 2027 Pan American Games, and the 2028 Summer Olympics.
For Atlanta United supporters, it’s another exciting milestone for one of the club’s brightest young talents.
Homegrown Talent Continues to Rise
Sanchez will remain available for Atlanta United’s MLS match against Nashville SC on July 17 before reporting to the national team camp.
The U.S. squad will gather at Real Salt Lake’s America First Training Ground beginning July 17 before departing for Mexico on July 21.
The Americans were drawn into Group A, where they’ll face:
- July 25: Haiti
- July 28: El Salvador
- July 31: Cuba
All three group-stage matches will kick off at 9 p.m. ET from Estadio Cuauhtémoc in Puebla, Mexico.
The top two teams from each group, along with the two best third-place finishers, will advance to the quarterfinals. Winning a quarterfinal berth secures qualification for both the 2027 FIFA U-20 World Cup and the 2027 Pan American Games.
The semifinals and final will then move to the historic Estadio Azteca in Mexico City.
Sanchez Becoming a Key Piece for Atlanta United
The 18-year-old midfielder has steadily become one of Atlanta United’s most important young players.
After signing as a Homegrown Player in August 2025, Sanchez wasted little time making an impression. He debuted for the First Team just one day later during Leagues Cup action against Atlas before making his MLS debut later that season against Columbus Crew.
Since then, his development has accelerated.
In 2026, Sanchez has started 12 of Atlanta United’s 13 MLS matches, contributing four assists while becoming one of the club’s most reliable midfielders. He also scored his first senior goal during Atlanta’s 2-0 U.S. Open Cup victory over Charlotte FC in April.
His versatility, composure on the ball, and maturity beyond his years have made him a trusted option under Tata Martino.
International Experience Continues to Grow
This latest call-up is far from Sanchez’s first experience wearing the United States jersey.
He has previously represented the U.S. at the U-16, U-17, and U-18 levels and featured prominently during the 2025 FIFA U-17 World Cup in Qatar, starting all three group-stage matches as the Americans advanced to the Round of 16.
Now he’ll have another opportunity to showcase his talent against the best young players in the Concacaf region while helping the United States pursue qualification for several major international tournaments.
For Atlanta United, Sanchez’s selection is yet another example of the club’s successful player development pathway producing talent capable of competing on the international stage.
With the MLS season entering a crucial stretch, the Homegrown midfielder will look to help Atlanta earn three points against Nashville before temporarily trading the Five Stripes for the stars and stripes.
What This Means for Atlanta United
Sanchez’s continued rise is encouraging news for Atlanta United supporters. While his absence during the tournament could leave a temporary gap in midfield, international experience at this level should only accelerate his development.
As Atlanta pushes toward the MLS playoff race, having another Homegrown player gaining valuable tournament experience could pay dividends later this season.
