Atlanta United is keeping one of its own for the long haul.
The 5-Stripes have signed Homegrown midfielder Jay Fortune to a contract extension through the 2030 season, a major commitment to a player who has grown from an Academy prospect into one of the club’s most dependable and popular young talents.
For the 22-year-old Fortune, staying in Atlanta means continuing a journey that has already taken him from the club’s player pathway to the First Team — and now gives him the opportunity to build an even bigger legacy in front of the 17s.
“Atlanta gave me my first opportunity in the professional space, so automatically that alone adds a bit of extra love and care that I have for the club and for the fans and everybody,” Fortune said. “Being able to be here, call this place home and continue to play for the badge every weekend is something I’ll cherish forever.”
The extension is another important investment in Atlanta United’s future and reinforces the club’s belief in the players it develops from within.
From Homegrown Prospect to First-Team Leader
Fortune’s rise has not happened overnight.
Like many young players who come through Atlanta United’s system, his path has included time with the Academy and Atlanta United 2, competition for minutes and setbacks that tested his patience. But Fortune continued to work his way forward and has become an increasingly important piece of the First Team.
Atlanta United has continued to rely on its young talent throughout the 2026 season, with players such as Cooper Sanchez and Adrian Gill also earning opportunities as the club builds toward the future. Sanchez’s recent U.S. U-19 National Team call-up is another example of the talent continuing to emerge through Atlanta’s system.
Fortune’s new deal, however, represents something even more significant: a long-term commitment to a player who has already proven he can contribute at the MLS level.
He has become one of the club’s most successful Homegrown players, ranking second in Atlanta United history among Homegrowns in appearances and third in goals. And when Fortune finds the back of the net, he usually makes sure nobody forgets it.
A Midfielder Who Delivers the Big Moments
Fortune has developed a reputation for producing spectacular goals.
His first goal for Atlanta United came in his home state of North Carolina against Charlotte FC in August 2024, a memorable strike that helped the 5-Stripes earn three points.
This season, he has continued to show that ability. Fortune produced standout goals against LA Galaxy and Orlando City, including a solo effort and a late equalizer that demonstrated his knack for arriving in dangerous areas at exactly the right moment.
“As a midfielder, the way I like to play is following up the play a little bit behind, late runs into the box and stuff like that, which has me in and around the top of the box,” Fortune said. “My dad, brother and I, we spent hours on the fields working on finishing all around the box. I enjoy just scoring harder.”
That attacking instinct adds another dimension to Atlanta’s midfield. Fortune is comfortable doing the hard work between the boxes, but he also has the confidence to step up when a moment requires something special.
And his celebrations have become part of the show, too.
Answering the Call
Atlanta United fans have become familiar with Fortune’s signature phone-call celebration after his goals.
The midfielder says the celebration can mean different things depending on the moment.
“I like to say it’s a moment of a goal might be needed, not just for myself but for the team, to answer that call in the moment,” Fortune said. “Other days, it might just be me talking to the guys I play PlayStation with.”
Whatever the message, Atlanta United will be hoping Fortune has plenty more calls to make between now and 2030.
More Than a Player: Fortune’s Connection to Atlanta
Fortune’s value to Atlanta United goes beyond what he does on the field.
The midfielder has become an active member of the club’s community efforts, serving as an Atlanta United Unified ambassador and participating in Community Impact events. That connection to the city and its supporters makes his long-term extension particularly meaningful.
For Fortune, Atlanta isn’t simply where he plays. It’s home.
“The fans are the greatest in the league by far, and to be able to see them every weekend at the Benz is a great feeling,” Fortune said. “All I want to do is bring wins to Atlanta.”
That relationship with the supporters has only grown as Fortune has established himself in the First Team. His journey also serves as an example for the next generation of Academy players hoping to follow the same path.

Locking Fortune down through 2030 is a significant piece of Atlanta United’s long-term planning.
The club has undergone considerable change during the 2026 season, including a summer roster reshaping that brought new faces to Atlanta while seeing several longtime players move on. Most recently, Atlanta United transferred defender Stian Gregersen to Malmö FF, continuing an eventful period of change for the 5-Stripes.
At the same time, Atlanta has added exciting talent and experience, including Swiss international Breel Embolo, whose arrival brings another major weapon to the attack. Embolo’s European experience and World Cup pedigree add to a squad that is increasingly being built with both the present and future in mind.
Fortune represents the other side of that equation.
He knows the club. He knows the city. And after earning his opportunity the hard way, he has the chance to become one of the faces of Atlanta United for years to come.
For the 17s, the call is clear: Jay Fortune is here to stay.

Atlanta United will look to continue building momentum as the 2026 MLS season moves forward. The 5-Stripes recently celebrated a third consecutive victory in a 2-1 win over Sporting Kansas City, a match in which Miguel Almirón made club history with his 42nd and 43rd assists.
With experienced stars, new arrivals and Homegrown players like Fortune all contributing, Atlanta’s next chapter is beginning to take shape.
