Interim head coach Rob Valentino may not be the man to take Atlanta United forward, but his impact is undeniable. Lagerwey praised Valentino’s leadership, which saw the team snap out of a midseason slump and embark on a magical playoff journey.
“Rob’s work was nothing short of incredible,” Lagerwey said. “He’ll forever be part of Atlanta United lore, especially with that unforgettable win over Miami. But we’re looking for someone with a championship pedigree to lead us into the future.”
While Valentino won’t be Atlanta’s next head coach, Lagerwey confirmed the search is down to a couple of finalists—both boasting impressive resumes. Fans can expect an announcement before the holidays, with the new coach bringing a track record of winning and a clear vision to elevate the team.
A Revamped Leadership Team

“We’ve got two designated player (DP) spots open, and we’re looking to fill them with players entering their prime—guys who want to compete for championships in Atlanta,” Lagerwey added.

Looking ahead, Lagerwey’s focus is on building a consistent contender. “Can we make where we ended in 2024 the new baseline? This is our expectation every year now. The next step is turning that into championships.”
