ATLANTA, GEORGIA—August 8, 2021, is now part of the history of FC Barcelona and all its countless fans since it is the day long-time superstar Argentine striker Lionel Messi officially bid farewell to the La Liga team.
In a press conference, Messi tearfully revealed that he wanted to stay with Barca but unfortunately the economic woes of the soccer club will not allow him to.
On the same forum, Messi also admitted he is talking with Paris Saint-Germain as his next destination.
It can be recalled that PSG reached out to Messi on August 4.
Sources said PSG sporting director Leonardo and chairman Nasser al Khelaifi are heavily involved in the discussions with Messi, having been in contact with his father Jorge for some time.
Analysts said if by chance PSG signs Messi into a contract it would increase the likelihood of Kylian Mbappe, who is out of contract next summer, signing a new long-term deal with the club.
In agreeing to sign the new deal with FCB, Messi has also decided to cut his pay.
The 34-year-old’s previous contract, which was worth over €500 million ($594m) over four years, expired at the stroke of midnight on June 30.
After his contract expired many people speculated that Messi will decide to play somewhere else.
However, after careful thinking, Messi eventually decided to sign a new deal with Barca.
Aside from his desire to continue playing for FCB, one reason Messi decided to re-sign with the soccer club is due to the return of Joan Laporta as FC Barcelona president in March.
