The Emory University men’s soccer team capped off another stellar season by clinching its second consecutive University Athletic Association (UAA) championship, and their dominance was reflected in the 2024 All-Association Teams announced Monday.
Graduate student Ryan Winkler stole the spotlight, earning UAA Offensive Player of the Year honors. Winkler’s accolade marks the second consecutive season an Emory player has claimed this award, a feat last achieved by Patrick Carver in 2007-08. The 2023 recipient, Colton Myers, passed the torch to Winkler, who dazzled with 10 goals—the first Eagle to hit double digits since 2017—and 22 points, both leading the UAA.
Winkler’s clutch performances were key to Emory’s success, including a brace against WashU and a dramatic late equalizer against Rochester to seal the regular season finale. He also earned Offensive Athlete of the Week honors three times during the year.
Head Coach Cory Greiner and his staff—Clayton Schmitt, Felipe Quintero, Jose Casique, and Tyler Sherman—were named Coaching Staff of the Year for the second consecutive season. This achievement mirrors the back-to-back wins by Emory Hall of Famer Mike Rubesch’s staff in 1988-89. Under Greiner’s leadership, the Eagles posted their best UAA record since 2008 (5-1-1), proving their mettle as a top-tier program.
Eagles Soar on All-UAA Teams
First Team
- Ryan Winkler (Graduate): Offensive leader with 10 goals and a pivotal figure in Emory’s attack.
- Josh Grand (Junior): A midfield maestro with 10 assists, the most by an Eagle in a season since 2008. He notched points in 11 of 17 matches, including game-changing contributions in conference play.
- Lorenzo Avalos (Sophomore): Second on the team in goals and a key playmaker in UAA action, earning his first All-UAA honor.
Second Team
- Jake Atallah (Graduate): Anchored the backline, contributing to four clean sheets, including three in UAA play.
- Julian Hee (Sophomore): Made a late-season impact with seven points, including a game-winner against NYU and a standout performance in the title-clinching win over Chicago.
Honorable Mention
- Michael Constant (Sophomore): A defensive rock, starting every game and helping hold opponents to just 19 goals during the regular season.
The Eagles wrapped up the season with an 8-7-2 overall record and a dominant 5-1-1 conference mark, their best UAA finish since 2008. With a roster packed with talent and a coaching staff poised to build on their success, Emory men’s soccer continues to cement its legacy as a powerhouse in the UAA.
