If you thought Atlanta United would take it easy after their 4-3 comeback win over New York City FC, think again. The 5-Stripes are locked in and fully focused as they return to training, making sure that dramatic victories don’t mask areas for improvement.
Three goals conceded and a 3-1 deficit? That’s not part of the long-term plan. Even though they secured three points, head coach Ronny Deila wants his squad sharper—and training sessions at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta Training Ground have reflected that.
Positional Awareness: The Key to Fluidity
Deila’s emphasis in training? Positioning. Football isn’t just about what players do with the ball—it’s about where they are when they receive it, where they move after a pass, and how they connect with teammates.
A great example of this? Atlanta’s first goal against NYCFC.
- A quick switch of play found Saba Lobjanidze in space.
- Saba’s well-timed run and cutback pass landed at Emmanuel Latte Lath’s feet.
- Suddenly, Alexey Miranchuk popped up at the perfect moment to finish.
It looked effortless, but that level of chemistry and movement takes work—and that’s exactly what Atlanta United is fine-tuning in training.
“We have to use our 6s more instead of playing outside, because that’s a trigger for the opponent,” said center back Stian Gregersen. “When we play out, they will come and push us … We’re working a lot on positioning to be as prepared as possible for the next game.”
Tactical Adjustments: Miranchuk’s New Role?
Speaking of Miranchuk, his shift to a deeper midfield role in the second half against NYCFC changed the game. The Russian playmaker was always available to receive the ball, helping Atlanta dictate play and launch attacks more fluidly.
Could this be a permanent shift? Deila and his staff are considering it.
“To have this rotation is not easy for the opponent,” Gregersen explained. “What Alexey did when he dropped down, especially in the second half, was brilliant.”
Atlanta United’s staff isn’t rushing the decision, but Miranchuk’s deeper role might be something to watch in the coming weeks.
Matt Edwards: The Swiss Army Knife
One of the biggest surprises of the season has been the versatility of Matt Edwards. The 21-year-old defender has already played as a right back, center back, and left back this season—stepping up whenever and wherever Deila needs him.
Against NYCFC, he played left back despite being a natural right back—and he didn’t miss a beat.
“You just want to be on the field,” Edwards said. “No matter where [Deila] asks you to play, you’re willing to play there.”
With injuries, tactical changes, and the grind of a long MLS season, having a player like Edwards is invaluable.
Deila’s Philosophy: “The Why” Matters
Throughout training, Deila challenged his players to think critically.
- “Why are you there?”
- “Why are you doing that?”
- “What picture do you have in your mind?”
Assistant coach Kenny Miller emphasized seeing plays before they develop, which can make the difference between a rushed clearance and a composed buildup.
And while perfection isn’t expected overnight, the intent and understanding are building blocks toward consistency.
“If you know why something is happening, you’re more likely to do it,” Edwards explained. “[Deila] has a style he wants to play. Him getting that message through to us is very important—especially for a team that wants to win everything.”
Looking Ahead
Atlanta United’s mentality after the NYCFC win says everything about where they want to go. No celebrating past victories—only pushing forward.
With positional discipline, tactical flexibility, and players stepping up all over the pitch, the 5-Stripes are sharpening their identity under Deila.
Next match? Next challenge. But this team is making sure they’re ready for it. 🔴⚫🔥
